The custom vs production debate will go on as long as pool is played. I belive if it feels good to you use it. Earl won his biggest tournaments with a $120 cuetech.

Chris...guess you know my story...Decades ago, a friend asked me to pay
$125 for a cue so he could get a good deal by ordering 2. That's how I
came to have a Palmer model M.

Fast forward after 30 years of marriage, running a small biz, child raising. Retired, thought I'd like to play pool again. Got the old stick out of the closet, and drew wayyy too much attention.

So, bought an entry level Jacoby J-2 as a player, but switched to a Josey a couple of years ago. I'm a lousy player, but having fun...:)

So, I probably messed your poll a bit with "intermediate with a custom"?
I'm really kind of a beginner...at age 66...

Now I remember - you wrote me a letter at the web site a long time ago right? Did you mail me some old fashioned pictures?

The cues I am asked most about is the Model M and the Model J. Those are the two Palmers people really like to own. I really like those old cues too.

Chris

Yep, that was me...fuzzy pics taken on a patio table...photography isn't my strong suit. Still trying to figure out what that is.

I've seen a few polls on here that incorporate items that require the individual vote on what they think their own skill level is. It's no surprise there's a disproportionate number of "advanced" players. LOL.

In the real world, it's more of a bell curve. With advanced players being a small percentage of the pool playing world.

Thank God for these self-proclaimed advanced players, otherwise there wouldn't be any easy money.

I'm sure, if you really wanted to find out, a few of those self-proclaimed easy money advanced players would be more than willing to accept a challenge for some $$$$. Just saying.

I truly am a beginner. I have been playing less than a year. I play with a custom. Several actually. I have a Jacoby, a custom from a guy in Whitehall PA, a Rat (if that is truly a custom) and a Josey Sneakey on order. I have a few cheaper productions that I bought. But the first time I shot a true custom I could feel the difference. Hard to put to words, but they just felt more solid and consistant to me. I'm not going back to productions. As to a LD shaft, who knows. I shot some OB's at the SBE. I may get one for my production cues and give it a whirl.

AS for me I'll take a custom any time. My next one may be a Troy Downey. I spoke to him at SBE and liked the man and his work. Won't be till very late this year or next year though. Need to save up the cash first.

My name is Mark Shuman and I'm a beginner.......

when I practice I'm not all bad, mostly I play once a week and thats it. I've bounced back and forth between old joss cues and customs. Mostly plain jane customs with wood handles. Like sneaky's about the most. I've had a bunch of players, currently its a sugartree. I can pick up a joss, put my old shaft I keep in the case on it, and play just as well.

No shame in that and thank you for your honesty.

I figured some of the expert players may not have expensive cues because theydon't want to spend the money on them.

I had my Ginacue stolen in 1984 (in the trunk of my car that was stolen) so I wanted to replace it and didn't want to spend much, so I bought a new Adam cue for $100. It was a great cue and everybody who tried it loved it. I used that cue for 20 years!

What I didn't know then was those old Adam cues were full splice, real rosewood (which is now banned and rare), and truthfully play better than 90% of today's cues. That's no kidding, they were pure and different from today's cookie cutter cues.

Chris

I have to agree with you on that. I have a lot of cues to choose from but rarely shoot with anything other than one of my trusty old Adam's.

Currently I take my 1970's Adam "A/H-35 Foxbat" As my shooter cue.

I used my A/H-25 "St Moritz" for a long time, Then switched to an "A/H-36-Corsair" (GOD I LIKE THAT CUE), I like them all really.

I feel a bit more relaxed these days taking a cue that doesn't attract too much attention, unless I'm going to have a lot of close friends along to keep an eye on things. I would just hate for one of the nicer ones to grow legs and wander off.

Advanced player. Playing with a stock Lucasi because that is all i can afford.
If there are any beginners out there with custom cues and you feel guilty i may trade my Lucasi with you so you can feel better. :grin-square:

That's funny ...thanks, made me laugh

I like custom playing cues with aftermarket low deflection shafts. I like the uniqueness that can be created with custom cues and I enjoy the extra precision that some of the top cue makers can provide on these one of a kind creations. The shafts; well right now, I am all over OB-2 shafts, until I try something better. I have an OB Classic ordered for my son's cue which I will have to test out for my son before I provide him with his present.

This thread is pretty cool and some interesting posts have been offered. It's kind of cool to get a "glimpse" of what goes on in the lives of other AZBers. Even the car talk is interesting. :D

If I had the talent, experience and equpiment, I wouldn't hesitate to build my own cue but at my age, by the time I acquired all of the above and finished it, I would be too old to carry it to the pool room, let alone play with it. :p

Tate, oops I voted wrong.. I should have voted Advance player with Custom Cue & aftermarket shaft (OB Classic)..

I made a boo boo and posted the choice second from bottom! :)
