Hello everyone... I am pretty new to the custom cue game and looking for some advice. I am also fairly new, about 3 years, to playing pool seriously. Since I started, I have been so intriqued by building techniques and everything that goes into a custom, probably the engineer coming out in me.

I started with a McDermott, now my player is a Pechauer (have a few) with a Z2 shaft. Love the combo. I also have an Adams Bushka cue I won in a cheap APA raffle, actually a decent hitting cue.

Right now being pretty young, I cant afford to spend thousands on cues, but have began doing research on all of the different customs. My question now is what are your opinion on good custom players under 1300?

I've kind of started my list with:

Bob Frey Sneaky
Zinzola (maybe a simpler one)
Carolina Customs

Just looking for suggestions as I venture into the world of customs. thanks in advance.

You can add about 20 more names to that list, sir.

Two come to immediate mind.....Tim Scruggs and Steve Klein. Maybe not necessarily brand new to your specs, but both can be had on the secondary market for your pricepoint...and both are DEFINITELY worth it.

Thanks for the quick reply... I know, there are a lot of names just looking for personal favorites. Good point though, I kind of counted the names you mentioned out on price but with the economy I've been seeing them both used at good prices.

I've owned 8 or 9 TS cues...and 3 Klein cues. Believe me when I say that you will get a real winner with either one.

Just so happens that they are both really great guys to deal with, too...so if you find a used one that needs some attention/repair/tweaking, they can hook you up.

Best of luck on the hunt, boss.

Mike Capone is another to put on that list. It wont be as fancy as you woule like but still very solid cue.
Where do you you play at in Indy? There are a few guys with cues that may let you try some of theirs out.

Thanks for the info. I'm up in fishers, NE side

Two that should be on the list for sure are CA$H and Gilbert cues. If you're spending $700-$1300, you'd actually be doing a disservice not looking at them. Both cuemakers are easy to work with, take custom orders and deliver within a year, most likely 4-6 months.

Theres a Scruggs on ebay for $1400.00 now and you can find some in here reasonable on ocassion. I dont own one but one of the best hitting cues I have hit was a Scruggs. For the money you can find a good variety of good cues by respected makers. Blackcreek comes to mind. I cant give you any opinions on cues I havent tried.I just picked up a cue from a gentleman by the name of John Bender it was the 41st cue he made and I am delighted with it. He is a good friend of Richard Black and although he didnt study under Richard he has aquired alot of knowledge from him.He doesnt do inlays but it is a sweet cue. I but a review of it in the cue review section. Do some through searches here and you will find many quality makers. Enjoy your search.

If you know someone who has a Coker....try it. I wasn't sure I'd like it since I shot with the same cue for years. solid hit, great ball control. I was impressed. check out westerncue.com

If you have $1300 and want a Custom cue you can get a nice cue for that price. My Andy Gilbert that is on order is 1450 but that is with upgrade on the wrap other wise it was $1350. I designed the cue and it's a ebony cue so that is a added charge as well.

$1300 is a great price point to be in. My personal favorites here (new or used) would be Scruggs, Zinzola, JMW sneakies, and Schon :-)

I dont know how much longer Carolina Customs will be in the cue business.
From what I have heard they are making more money in an other type of work

Here are a couple more to consider:

Bobby Hunter
Rick Howard
Richard Chudy
CA$H <- Already mentioned, but I would second this!

All of these guys make a cue that should cost more than what you pay for it.

Good luck!
