I'd like to learn how to do a cut break but I can't quite figure it out from watching videos. Is there a special technique to it? Inside english hit on the opposite side of the 1 ball or something? ~Thanks.

You really do not need any specific english. You are basically "cutting" across the front of the one ball on the opposite side of the table you are breaking from. You will jump the table some until you learn to control it. JMO.

Kim Davenport teaches one version of the cut break in order to pocket the nine ball on the break. I think that there are other versions of the cut break, but this is the only one I could find online.

For more information you can try Bert Kinister Vol. 48 "The Soft Break in 9-ball". I watched the video a long time ago and this is probably closer to what you are looking for. If I can find the time to dig up the video and watch it again, I will post and let you know his method of breaking the balls. All I remember off the top of my head is that he said to aim for about 3/4 ball hit on the one ball.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Tony Robles just discussed this in the recent Predator pool school, and confirmed what I had tried a few times in the past. He said he considers any break not hitting the 1 ball full a cut break, whether it's hit soft or a bit harder. The main variety is setting up the cue ball on the headstring, and say 1 diamond left of the spot. Instead of breaking into the 1 ball full, aim for about a 3/4 hit on the 1 ball, and use low outside english to bring the cue ball to the side rail and back to the middle of the table. That's about what I've tried with a medium speed (NOT soft), and you get good control and good action on the balls. Of course from there you can adjust speed, hit on the 1 ball, starting location of the CB, etc. until you find you are making the wing ball or 1 ball consistently. And of course you can only do this is soft or cut breaks are allowed in the league/tourney you are playing in...

Billiard Club Network has Buddy's breaking tips up on YouTube. He has a pretty good descripton of using the cut break for breaking from the box...which is the same as scottjen26's description. He also talks about it while commentating a match between Basavich and Deuel, linked below.

I don't use it too often since typically I'm never required to break from the box...but I sometimes will try it if the side rail break with a full hit is not getting me a shot on the one ball. However, I'll always try different cue ball locations and different speeds before using a cut break. On some tables a cut break from the box can be a good adjustment, or even a cut break from the side rail.
