Dan janes '71-72 'Ed Kelly' cue

The picture of Ed Kelly is of him shooting with his box cue made by Ginacue (Ernie Gutierrez) in 1969, and is the first box cue ever made. The cue is mentioned in the Blue Book in the section for Ginacue.

Ed made the cue famous while on his travels as a road player, and the cue single-handedly influenced the cuemaking for several top cuemakers, somewhat changing the landscape of cues in the US.

I like box cues and have dozens in my collection. I own this Ed Kelly Ginacue, along with many others made by Gus Szamboti, Josswest, David Kersenbrock, Bill Schick, Barry Szamboti, Paul Mottey, Gilbert, Tonkin, Scruggs, etc.

I have attached some pictures of a few box cues in my collection; older pictures, but you can see them pretty well:

Josswest, Josswest (Bill Stroud`s personal cue), Josswest, David Kersenbrock (only box cue DPK made), fancy Gus Szamboti, Ed Kelly Ginacue, Barry Szamboti, Gus Szamboti, Josswest (made for Richie Florence), Joss (made for Jim Rempe).

I LOVE that display case. Great idea!

Those are some amazing cues Will...will they be displayed at the St Louis show? The only production cue I own is a Meucci Original box cue often called the quazar cue. I get comments on it all the time and it's my player at the moment.

I haven`t settled on what I plan to take to the show, but I am sure I will have a couple of these. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks!

That's right fasteddief Valley Forge show.
Will, love your box cues, hope to see you at 2012 SBE.

Hi Bob,

Good to hear from you! See you soon at SBE again.

By the way, the box cue that started this thread is the one Buss bought at the end of the show a couple of years ago. The poster on here who sold it to Jim also spoke with me a couple-three times about the cue, a nice one!

This is a great post indeed Will and it's great to see pics of your collection pal.

The Josswest vesion of the Ed Kelly cue, (Or a copy of it) was used by Scott Bakula in the "Pool Hall Blues" episode of Quantum Leap, which also featured a brief cameo of Robert "Rags" Woods)

I did briefly own a Carolina Custom copy of the G Szam box cue that was on the cove of "The Snap" magazine in the early 1990's cue and unfortunately I no longer have it, it's now in the hands of another cue collector :) lol

Many thanks for sharing the pics of your collection Will and if you have a few more exhibits to your collection, it'd be cool to see 'em

Cheers

Who the heck are you DUKEEEE, Herb Ritts?

Thanks for sharing this classic JOSS CUE with us. That is a great, and I think, "rare" cue.

Matt, is that a G Szam "Snap" box cue copy in your avatar?

If so, it would be cool to see some pics of the entire cue

Damn that collection is a drool fest for anyone who appreciates a good collectible custom cue :)

Very nice indeed Will and thank you for sharing, good sir.

Do you have any more 'box' cues in your collection or is that all of them?

Willie

Thanks for sharing

Your Dad had good taste. Joss was making some great cues back then. I am sure your inbox is getting flooded with some offers.

Personally I would keep this treasure around especially since your dad left it to you.

If you have time please take some better pictures.
