Hey guys I've been hearing many good things about Hills cues. I'm in the market for one of these cues and was just wondering what you guys thought of his work. Do you think his cues will increase with value over time?? are they great playing cues?? The one thing I have noticed is that they look very unique. Thanks for the help.

I contacted Mr. and Mrs. Hill about having a cue made about 4-5 months. Mrs. Hill did most of the talking between me and Mr. Hill. They both seemed very easy to deal with, and offered the cue I wanted at a more than fair price. I have never hit with a Hill cue though, so I ended up going with a cue maker whose cues I had more playing experience with.
 
I had one of Darrin's cues and it was very solid and a good player with excellent workmanship. I would doubt that the value of the cue would go up much but that is the case with about 99% of the cues you pay full retail for at initial purchase. I bought one for 700 and played with it for about two months and ended up selling it for 650, so I would say it maintained its value very well. For instance if I had purchased a Schon (great cues) and tried to sell it two months later I would probably have to take a 25% loss on the sell.

Of course you're going to hear good things, you live near Chicago.

I enjoy the workmanship in Hills Cues. The ones I've seen have all been simple designs, but I've seen photos of his more intricate work and I like it.

I've hit with only one Hills cue, but I felt it played well. Not whippy, stiff hit.
 
i had a hills cue and i liked it and so did everyone i let hit with it. mine didn't hold it's value and if you check the wanted forum you'll see a lot of people seem to take losses when they sell them.
 
Darrin makes a great cue and I have one of his beautiful ebony/snakewood cues with three shafts for sale here.
 
the real question?

I guess the most important question might be... are you looking for a "player" or an investment cue?

If you're looking for a player with great execution, attention to detail, and GREAT looking woods, then Darrin would be an excellent choice. I have one that plays very good and most of the people that have tried it, have loved it, and many have tried to buy it.

However the previous posters were correct in their skepticism about appreciating value. Although very accomplished, Darrin is still relatively unknown (besides Chicago and those in the know) In this soft market, there are only a few cues that can "guarantee" appreciation and I probably don't need to mention names.

All in all, a great cue for the money. If you can pick up one that you like on the second hand market. I don't think you can go wrong. I really feel that when the smoke clears, Darrin Hill will be considered one of the finest cue makers on the planet! IMHO

I've got one of his cues and have to say it is one of the most SOLID cues I have played with. Not whippy, if you like a solid hit, hes the maker to go with. Craftmanship is excellent, finish is excellent and I've heard only good things about dealing with them. If you want some pics of his work search my posts and you'll find pics of the cue. I would definately say go for it if you were thinking about it.
 
Darrin is the top cuemaker currently, my old school hill cue 1 of a kind will be in my hands this week & will be posting pics. :)
