Yes, this is how Efren shoots most shots, swinging his hand/cue and then releasing it onto the cue ball. He literally throws the cue at the cue ball. I have studied this extensively over the years, even played like that for a while. And he's not the only one, Jeremy Jones does a similar thing. Only Jeremy never uses the thumb during the shot, whereas Efren usually only removes the thumb from the grip on final forward stroke. It's a very fun way to shoot, but requires perfect timing. The reasoning behind it being that it's easier to keep the object on the straight line by throwing it instead of pushing it through the stroke. Also, this way any steering of the cue by the player throughout the stroke is mostly removed. You find the line of the shot, place the cue on it, swing the cue and release it onto the cue ball.
