Dating a Gold Crown 1

Irrelevant in relation to when the table was "built". Per Brunswick, they did not date code parts relevant to when the table was put together because it was never put together at the factory. When a table was ordered, they picked the parts off the shelf, so to speak to box it up and ship it out. They did not "assembly line" each table individually.
A friend bought early 3 that was a true 'Franken-crown', it had parts from a 1,2, and a 3 on it.

The only difference between a 1 and 2 was the color scheme. Every change that people think which was a definition of a 2, was done in the 1's first. So other than the Rosewood paint stained finish on the 3, there wouldn't be anything of the GC2 in that 3. And the only carry over of the 1 would have been the castings and bent T bar the castings bolted to, nothing else was carried over from the 1. And Brunswick has never dated the manufacturer date of any GC, that a person can look as and say when the table was built, ever!

Technically, couldn't they have used the ball tray bezel and feet from a II being as they are the same finish as those on the III?

No, they changed the casting makeup on the 3, and put a bronz finish on it, but, yes, it's still interchangeable with any Gold Crown.
