DCC Draw

For the last few years a mysterious, proprietary, black box of a software program has been in use at the DCC for the tournament draw. Now personally, I believe that something like a tournament draw should be totally transparent, not unlike the lottery, so everyone can see that everything is, how shall we say, untainted by human intentions :-)

So my question is: does anyone know if this computer draw is completely random, or, is it not random?

And if it's not random, then what parameters are being used to make the draw?

Lou,
From a fairness standpoint I'm confident that it's random (enough) . lol If there is any manipulation whatsoever, I'm sure it's due to the scheduling difficulties of the format and fact that there are often 2 main tournaments going on at the same time. Some think the format is flawed with the "buyback", but IMHO it's one of the things which makes the DCC , the greatest annual tournament in history!

just more hot air!

Lou,
I'd be glad to show you the program used to generate the draw at the DCC....If it's hard for you to understand, because of the language used, then you are welcome to get anyone you can find that understands computer language to explain the randomness, because its all Greek to me. We can do a test for you if you don't have a computer friend. Just call me when you would like the test.(812-989-6665).. It's not a black box, just a software program. Definitely mathmatically completely random. I had the programers make it that way....I've got way to much to loose having a program written as you say "tainted by human intensions". Lou, you've been hanging around way too long with "business people" woops I mean "pool players" , to have those kind of thoughts...ha! Greg/Diamond

Hey Greg.....In the last 8 years playing in the One Pocket, with 300-430 players to draw from, that damn program of yours has gotten me Rafael Martinez, Santos, Cliff, and Richie Richeson in the first round....I'ts a drag starting out 0 and 1 all the time :(.....In the first round this year, would you please program me for a 70 year old farmer, a girl, or, I'd even settle for you or Mark Griffin ! :D:D:D

Greg, thanks for clearing that all up. And you're right, I've been hanging around the wrong crowd -- many years back I entered a 9ball tournament and they said they had a computer in the basement that would do the random draw. So, we all waited around. The draw came back. We played. And the house pro won the event (and calcutta). Months later another player and I were talking about that event, and he dryly remarked, "You know it wasn't until days later that I realized: that building doesn't even have a basement."

Thanks again, Greg.

Yeah, what he said. Out of all the gin joints, in all the world, I've drawn John Brumback two events in a row.

Do you have the code? I can look at it for you as an unbiased 3rd party and reply back if Lou wants.

Thanks for the offer Kelly, but that's totally unnecessary. I completely take Greg at his word. In fact, just to clarify further, I wasn't trying to imply any skulduggery in the first place, I was actually wondering, if it was not a random draw, whether the program attempted some kind of seeding.

Hey Lou-- Not to knock your action, but you should have a chance against Brumback in 1P, but not in banks. You play better than I, and I had a chance to beat John at Grady's GCC Classic. He beat me 3-2, but we were tied at three, and I had scratched late in the game which put him up.

Good luck in the one-hole. I hope you draw someone easy like OnePocketGhost, or Joey A...:D

Yeah, of course you're right, Doc (thanks for the "No Knocking Disclaimer" :-) Both times I played JB I felt like I was in the game, and it coulda gone the other way, but didn't.

OnePocketGhost and Joey?! -- Either, as a first round draw, would be the nuts, compared to JB :-)

Hi Greg....Jim here...Alli and Kim's sponsor. First THANKS for your hospitality. The ladies were VERY, VERY enthusiastic about the event and plan to compete next year too!

Re: the draw. I always thought the top pros were "seeded" so they didn't knock heads in the early rounds and get one loss while the bangers...like me...have a chance to advance.

I understand your post to mean that is not the case...but since other major events...tennis in particular...are seeded for that very reason...I suggest you give some thought to that for next year. Clearly, the field would be reduced that much quicker if you did.

The pros would appreciate it and I can't imagine the bangers complaining. I HOPE to draw Efren every year but haven't yet!!!

Why? For the MEMORY and...because it would be a GREAT excuse for losing!! And if I got 4 or 5 racks against him, you wouldn't be able to shut me up!!!

Thanks for a GREAT event!
