As I understand it, you are an M.D. and not concerned at all about the financial aspects of playing pool.
I have a brother (a very successful investment banker) who says that any form of gambling "Is A Total Waist Of Time" and from his perspective - I agree.
IF HE COULD PLAY PERFECT POOL AND WIN EVERY GAME OF THE HIGHEST STAKES POSSIBLE, HE WOULD LOSE MONEY (because of the time involved), COMPARED TO RUNNING HIS CORPORATION.
I am not calling you "A Nit". If anything, I envy you.
But I have grown up in an era that the playing of pool had two different avenues that could have been taken once you decided to pursue it for a career.

Thanks for the kind words. You have again hit the nail on the head. For me it is extremely difficult to get time off work, and (being self-employed) the time I do take off is at great cost. Pool is a total money-losing proposition for me whether I win or lose at what small amount of gambling I do. I think my high-rolling gambling aquaintances might disagree with your "nit assessment." They think anyone that doesn't just throw money at them is a super-nit; or at least that's what they will say in an attempt to goad the person into gambling with them. I'm pretty sure I qualify for nit status if those are the qualifications. I overheard Ronnie Wiseman use the term when haggling/arguing with Tony Chohan - very entertaining, but it looked like Ronnie was risking serious personal injury.

Actually I AM a beginner at straight pool compared to the people with whom I compete. I've just been playing seriously for about 2 1/2 years now. But hopefully I'm in the accelerated program.
Race to 1000. I'm not kidding. If I told you what spot I received, you wouldn't be quite so impressed.
