Has anyone looked at the straight pool videos from this years DCC, yet. I've looked at one and am watching another now. Available from the dcc website via Accustats.

Danny Diliberto is very good at analyzing the proper way to play the game. Patterns, safeties, key balls, etc., I see he is on all the videos. Can't wait to watch them.

dmg,
Sorry we couldn't get in any straight pool at DCC. I was fortunate to be able to sweat several of the straight pool matches with a professional friend (getting a running commentary). Lessons with Danny D. are the same - you get a "pro's eye view" of every shot and situation as it comes up in a game - very entertaining and instructive. Danny has studied (and teaches) the finer points of the game, in more depth than anyone I have met.

I am hoping to get Danny D. back to Indy for a couple of days, and hope to have an AZB get-together at that time. I'll let you know just in case you want to make the jaunt from Chicago. Pool, lodging, food, beverages, and pool always free in Betmore's Basement.

Yeah, sorry we couldn't have played. I saw you and your pro friend sweating one of the matches already on the ppv accustats link. Danny said he was coming to Indy to show that pro some 1 pocket and that he also had to see a doctor for some lessons.

I am in the middle of the Appleton/Feijen match now and his commentary is outstanding. I would love to get a few 14.1 pointers from him. But, alas, I know I must become a better shotmaker and better at doing what I know I should be doing, before I will be able to progress in this game.

Dana has some video of the runs themselves?? Sounds like a treasure trove for straight pool nuts.

I hope I can come down when DD is there. Keep me posted.

D-man,
The video from the qualifying stages currently resides in Dana's computer, which is still sitting in my mudroom (I brought it home from DCC for him, and he hasn't picked it up yet). There were some great runs; I'm not sure of Dana's plans for distribution (assuming I don't steal his computer).

The beauty of straight pool is that the "old school" straight pool knowledge can definitely help your game at any stage of pocketing proficiency. Also, even if your straight pool knowledge is exceptional (which I am assuming it is), it is STILL quite helpful to have a master discuss every shot with you as it is played; and answer every question you have as it comes up - it is a LOT of fun as well as being educational.

There are many absolute precepts in straight pool; but they ALL must be violated frequently. Knowing when to follow them, and when to violate them is the art of the game, and masters of risk reduction like Danny D. can communicate some sense of this. I saw very little of the "old-school" game during the competition at DCC; but it is a style very much worth studying.

Wille- Have you watched the commentary on the matches yet. Some of the best I have ever heard on any straight pool match.

Danny had plenty to talk about because, as you know, the old school rules were being violated constantly. Therein lies the educational part of the videos.

I would love to be able to get down to Indy when DD comes to town.

Dana said maybe utube or something for the footage. Mike at AZB.tv would probably also love to be able to host that video footage.

DW,
No, I have not heard the commentary; but it sounds like something I would be interested in purchasing. I am fairly certain that a session with Danny D. would be very similar to the commentary you are describing.

He is quite firm in his belief that there is a "right way and a wrong way" to handle most situations (the "right" way being the way the most efficiently MINIMIZES RISK; understanding that the "wrong" way will often succeed, but in the long run lose you money compared to the "right" way). Men who have supported themselves and their families with pool have learned that minimization of risk is a good thing. If you can lower your risk by even a few percentage points, then it is worth doing in most situations. A playing lesson with such a master can be invaluable. JMO.

A very cool option at DCC is to have a headphone/wireless set that allows you to hear the booth commentary live as you watch the match. I am sorry that I did not make use of this option during the straight pool (though I had sort of a commentary from my friend). I did use the headset during the Banks Ring Game, and found Grady and Danny's commentary educational and entertaining (as usual).

I watched the match with Rolf S and couldn't agree more to how good the commentary was. I know Danny and I would greatly encourage anyone to watch to all the matches to take your straight pool game to the next level for players at all levels. He brings a lot of great knowledge to the table in his commentary. Those videos are well worth the cost opf the PPV. I was talking about those videos with a friend last night whose been working on his straight pool game. Great job Danny D and Accu Stats

Unfortunatley, they are not available as dvds, yet. And after you purchase them you have 12 hours to finish watching them. I have purchased the Schmidt match twice and haven't finished it yet.

Sounds like something I would like to do. His opinion of Harold Worst's 14.1 game echoed what Sailor told me a week ago. "He wasn't a straight pool player. He played straight pool like he played nine ball. He just made everything he shot at.

Next year, I think I will schedule my time at DCC so that I can see all of the 14.1

D-man,
Excellent plan, perhaps we can sweat some matches together.

Your comment on Harold Worst is very cogent. I have tremendous respect for the straight pool games of the players we've been discussing. Their shotmaking ability is spectacular, and they have tremendous heart to put themselves out there in a discipline where competition is rare at the highest level. It is obvious that some have practiced the game and tried to learn more (Schmidt, Harriman, Immonen, Hohmann, Feijen); and equally obvious that some haven't a clue about the finer points (including the RULES; ie. Deuel and Appleton); but as became apparent, the greatest players will learn the game as they play - the game will teach you something as you play.

I overheard Corey Deuel saying, "man, if I just played this game for a few weeks, I think I could get good at it." No doubt. He seemed quite enthused about the challenge of it, and I hope he plays more.

It is truly entertaining to watch such great players; and it only reinforces my view that learning the old school game is where most average players should start. My shotmaking will most likely NEVER be as good as these players, and I doubt I will ever be able to play as they do. But if I study the old school game, not only will I be able to beat most players of equal or lesser shotmaking ability, but can even on occasion give the better shotmakers a run for their money (though so far the money has been generally running the opposite direction).

PH,
Very nice meeting you as well. Our games were DEFINITELY the high point of my DCC experience, and really deserve a thread all of their own....I think I'll do it now. I'm doubtful I'll get down to Florida anytime soon, but Betmore's Basement is always open if you get up this way again.
