I recently recovered my table and the head rail has a definite "thud" when a ball hits it. The rail bolts are tight. Did I forget something? Thanks in advance.

Dead or loose rubber.

Besides the thud sound, do balls rebound off the rail like the other rails?

Yes, I have to say they rebound okay.
Measure the nose height of all the cushions, see if they're all the same, if so, what is it
Loose skirt on home style leather drop pocket style tables will give off a loose rattle because it's only held on in place with a few wood screws. But you can get a thudding sound if the rail cloth is stapled to the bottom of the rail past the cloth stapling dad. The thickness of cloth will lift the nose height up higher than the other rails if thats the case. Also, if you don't bolt the pockets in with both pocket bolts you can get sound from the pockets.

Okay, so I checked the skirt. Sure enough, a piece of wood had fallen off the lip where the skirt screws in and the screw on the left was not getting any purchase. I drilled a new hole and reinstalled the skirt and voila! Problem solved. Thanks for your help. You guys are awesome!
