Debating if I should just quit with the expensive custom cues..?

this is the comparison that I don't like...sure, everyone would take the Benz over the Kia. Now, tell me, you have a choice between two S65 AMGs, do you take the one off the showroom floor to drive daily, or do you send the showroom car to Louis Vitton for upholstry, a jewler for diamond uncrusted guages, and platinum trim throughout?? Let's compare Scruggs to the Mercedes....you could get the exact wood in forearm, handle, and butt with the same two (or however many shafts)....one has a gazillion ivory inlays, multiple points and veneers, etc. etc. etc., and the other is the base woods only....there's the comparison I wanna hear folks' opinions on. Cosmetics only differences.....???? Do the cosmetics and the fact that you know the more expensive one cost more give some type of placebo effect that makes you think it plays better than the plain jane??

To some people-yes it does give the placebo effect. Do i think it should make a difference,no. But it's not my thread, i was just giving some perspective from a situation i've witnessed first hand. I have a cue that plays incredible, but am hesitant to take it everywhere. My point was if it makes you feel a certain way, play with the big dog and don't worry about it. But if you have to think about something other than your game, maybe it's not worth it. JMO

I like your closing quote...if I were to have one along the same lines, mine would say: "if you are a cuemaker, hope that YOU (the cuemaker) win the lottery"...lol.

The best feeling/shooting cue I've ever tied was a butterfly sneaky made by Diveney. I could always have him make something that cost 10X more than the one I tried, but I'm sure I'd feel much more comfortable playing something of his for under a grand and not feel like I have to keep one eye on my cue and case everytime I go to get a drink. Not far off my philosophy in regards to wagering...only play with what you are willing to lose. I'd hate to have a $750 cue stolen, but I'd be SICK having a $3K one taken. Like I said, different for everyone...

I've had some nice cues and some crappy cues. I just recently puchase a Predator SP w/ 314-2 shaft to use as an everyday player. But the only problem is I CAN"T STAND IT! I've gone back to my plain jane Schmelke w/ a Z shaft and play great. So basically I spent 600$ on a nice Predator cue w/ 2 shafts and it's probably going to sit in my case and will eventually get sold for pennies on the dollar. But, the point to my story is play with what feels good to you. If you like a 100$ Schmelke or a 5000$ custom use it, because it's no fun to play the came you love and be distracted by something so petty as the cue.

First of all, let me say that its wonderful to have the great George Fels posting here. Concerning cues, I have a couple of $1K players myself. Tough to take them out of the case. Too much to lose. I just picked up a Lucasi Hybrid and put a smart shaft on it. Hits as good as any cue I've ever hit with, bar none. And its painted. Refinish ? Just a dab of paint will do. Someone might mistake for a golf club, but not for a sneaky pete. I'm in love.

So I've been debating for a few days on if I want to just give up with the custom cues... My custom hits really good but the fact is it's worth way more on the secondary market that I paid for it all those years ago.. Sometimes I just feel it's a little excessive and silly to be shooting with e a $3500 cue... so I've got half a brain to just give up on them and go buy a MEZZ MPC2 M get used to it and just take it from there.. that or just go with a dufferin conversion from Corsair cues.. I just don't know.. like I said i'm debating.. thoughts on the same thing? etc are appreciated.

I use a 3000.00 TS as an every day shooter. I dont see a problem with that.

However you could spend far less and have an equivalent shooter made. After all it is the selection of the components and the way they are assembled that determines how a cue will play. Not the ornamentation.

In my opinion there is nothing better than converting an antique full spliced cue. Keeping it full spliced though is a must. Its generally an inexpensive route to go depending on who the builder is of course.

I think you should play with the cue you are comfortable with. If you aren't comfortable with your $3500 custom and you can make a nice profit selling it then let it go and buy something you are comfortable with. I personally have tried it both ways using custom cues and production cues. I like a nice looking custom cue the best so that's what I play with. I have a friend who could care less what his cue looks like so he'd never put much money in his cue and he plays much better than I do so maybe you should go with what suits you the best.
