Decent everyday home use Cue under $100?

If this is for home use and you just want something that plays well, just get a couple Dufferin house cues. They're really cheap, obviously one-piece but since you're not taking it anywhere it doesn't really matter. They play great so long as you keep the tip in good shape.

Seriously, I'm actually surprised nobody suggested it. Everybody knows a brand new Dufferin plays like some of the best cues on the market.

Makes sense, but i want a 2-piece just in case I travel somewhere or decide later to enter a local tourney. I'm sure 98% of the play will be at home, but I have to leave room for that 2%. :D

Lucasi is probably the best out there in that range. You can do quite well with them.

you know, i was going to suggest lucasi, mainly because if he wanted to upgrade to a pred shaft, uni-loc is the easiest joint to find used pred shafts for, but after thinking about it, if he's looking for a decent cue under 100, then he might as well go with a players SP because lucasi's, while nice cues rarely go under the coveted $100 dollar mark.

i've owned several players and two lucasis, and to this day i prefer a players over a lucasi.

altho, now that i think about it Falcon Cues came out with their basic models for ~ $200 dollars (correct me if im wrong) and those cues hit excellent. (karen corr and keith mccready both shot with falcons at one point if im not mistaken)

Yeah, I had a Falcon Break/Jump and I was really fond of it.

Only IMO:

Dufferin 2 pc sneakies, only IF you can find the Canadian made ones. Bout $80.

Lucasi SP for $115 delivered on ebay are a heck of a deal for the money.

OK I know you guys keep getting these questions from newbs like me, but here goes.

I am picking up pool again after a 10 year layoff. My New 8' Olhausen will be delivered in a couple weeks (waiting on cloth). I used to be an OK player (played in some local tournaments), but I'm sure I suck right now. I used to play with my Dad's $500 Adams, but he has since re-claimed it.

Not looking for anything fancy (though I don't like the looks of the sneaky petes). Just something to shoot with for an hour or two a day at my house. After extending my budget for the Olhausen, my cue budget is almost nothing.

I am looking at the following:

Players pool cue stick Players G-2253 With Case [playersg2253] $90.00
Star pool cue stick Star AUTHORITY ST7K With Case [starst7k] $103.96
Fury pool cue stick Fury DL-12 With Case [furydl12] $92.00
ST7P - McDermott's Star "Lightning" Cue NO CASE $80

I am leaning towards the Star line since they come with the McDermott warranty (is a warranty needed?).

Any other places to look? Any other brands I am missing? Should I just get a $40 Rage?
I can't speak for any of the cues you listed except for the Player. I would recommend the Player 100%. I bought mine from ozone billiards and got free shipping and a great price. Just enter player pool cue on your search engine, and you'll get a ton of choices where to buy it. I bought the Player as a jump cue, liked it better than the (much more expensive) cue I was using as a playing cue, so I sold it and kept the Player. Whatever you decide, you are a smart cookie for coming on here and asking for opinions. Good luck, whichever way you go.

McDermott's hit really really well, the only thing that turns me off to them are the fat butts in the lower end models. (a friend of mine bought one of those 1100 dollar mcdermotts with the carbon core shaft... def not worth the money imo) but thier hit is very solid and non-flex.

I won a cheap McDermott in a tournament one time & I really liked that cue. Wish I still had it. I could switch between that McD & my Schon or Joss with a 314 without any effort.

I bought a used, $30 Action cue for my nephews to bang around with and I was amazed at the feel of that insanely cheap & ugly cue...until I snapped the ferrule off breaking one time. I got more than $30 play out that cue though.

I've played with Players and I did not like them one bit.

Here's an off-the-wall idea:
I bought a used 314 one time for $75. Throw that on an Action $30 butt and you have a humble, yet very effective $105 cue.

Two questions for ya mosconiac:

What specifically didn't you like about the players? Tip, shaft, finishing, deflection (though I'm not sure if i am in the "have to worry about deflection level yet")? My dad has a players, and I have held it, but not shot with it. Felt pretty good to me. (he has a Adams he bought for $500 25yrs ago and he regularly switches between the two).

What is a 314? Is it an upgraded shaft?

Also, a question for everyone....If I get the Star or Players I am looking at, is there a "MUST HAVE" upgrade I should get like an upgraded tip or something? Are the triangle tips the recommended upgrade?

I have been hearing a lot about soft tips are better for more english, I do use english when needed, but I also don't want a tip I have to replace every three months. I don't plan to break with this cue though (I will use one of my one piece house cues for that). I also have no clue how to replace a tip or ferrule.

I was in the same situation you are in. Really didn't want a sneaky pete either. I found a new McDermott M61-g (Velocity) on Ebay for $70. It doesn't have the linen wrap which I like. Nice stick for the price.

Wow, i just ordered my cue and closed the window and was looking right at your post. I must have missed it previously, but I just bought a McDermott M61-D velocity in black with a 1X1 case for $119 shipped!

I hope I made the right choice. I really like the simple black (with wrap) and i feel better knowing it's a McDermott and not the Star version.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I am sure I will back again asking more newb questions in the future.

Now I just need my table and cue to arrive.

Just a quick reply to Thank everyone who offered advice on my house cue. I ended up with the McDermott M61-D velocity in black. It is a standard size 13mm in 19oz. I have had it for a few day's and I really like it. The tip is nicer than the ones on my one piece house cues, and it really feels well balanced. I especially like the lifetime warranty, the lifetime MX and the fact it's Made in the USA. I'm still waiting on my 1X1 case and free rubber claw (mixup with hawkeye billiards).

Now I just need to not try to watch football on Sunday and play pool at the same time. I shoot like crap, trying to get back to the couch to watch the games. :)
