ok, for all of you maestro's out there, how do you play this shot and gain position on the '2'? hope its clearly understood the '1' Ball is so deep in the pocket that going rail first is simply not an option.

If getting back anywhere close to a good angle on the 2 is not on or very risky, I'd play a stop shot on the 1 then play safe on the 2 hiding the CB behind the 9.

Yeah, what he said.

If it is a small table, fast cloth, you could try drawing back. The 8 ball looms big, so don't draw behind it. You should either know whether you have a legitimate chance of drawing back based on your stroke and the condition of the table, or whether it is fruitless. Trying to work with something not there is just a poor choice. I would draw back a little to get out of the jaws and play safe. The 4 isn't exactly easy even if you somehow made the 2, so prospects of running out are low.

I'd just make the 1, and draw the cueball back down table for the 2. If I end up with poor angle to make the 2, I play safe.

Is this a serious question? DCP, I think your posts are lowering my IQ.

On most tables I'd probably go for the draw shot and expect to get at least enough of a look for a safe. Another option, against a lesser opponent, is to go rail first and "accidentally" miss the one, and let them deal with it. The 4 is no picnic, anyway.

Shoot at the right side of the one to hit the ball and the right side of the pocket near the same time with a good draw stroke to come straight back down for the two.

i would probably hit the short rail first with inside english, it would tip the one in and bring the cue back down table, might get in shape for the 2 in the corner, might have to shoot safe.

Going for broke in pratice, I'd probably hit the left jaw with low english coming two rails for short side postion on the two, a ball can't be to deep in the pocket to come rail (or jaw) first imo allthough obviously the results become pretty unpredictable. In league play, I'd probably play a draw shot hoping to get somewhere near the bottom long rail to have a chance at a cut on the two, or play safe if I feel I can miss the shot.

I asked a similar question a while back and got a reply that I tried and it worked.

Shoot with high english and cut the ball to the left into the pocket. The CB will carom onto the corner of the short rail jaw and back down the rail somewhere near the side pocket. From there either take the shot or shoot safe.

I asked the question after having a similar shot on the 8 in 8 ball where the cue ball was on the opposite long rail at the other end of the table. I could not put any low english on the ball to avoid a scratch and the ball was too deep in the pocket to it it rail first.

If you wanted to go cross table with the cue ball, cut to right and carom off long rail jaw. I tried it both ways on the practice table and it worked.
