Definition of "Inlays"

Just curious what is truly considered an countable inlay ?

Obviously the obvious stuff but what about rings , 'stuff' in rings , veneers and/or numbers of layers in the veneers? Maybe even joint colllers and butt caps ? Short spliced points?

Thoughts ?

My dictionary says "To set INTO a surface to form a design". If you cut a hole & fill it with a different material, then that is an INLAY...JER
