Deflection!

My break is doing great compared to what it used to be! I'm also moving the ball around the table very nicely! I'm getting much better about staying in line! However...I'm missing wayyy too many shots when I use english because I am getting so much deflection and I can't judge it accurately.

I've got to go to a shaft that causes as little deflection as possible...I guess? Would somebody tell me what I should use? OB1? Predator? Mezz? What already?

Thanks in advance!

Choosing one shaft over another is not going to solve your problems. There are both advantages and disadvantages to LD shafts. Also, even with an LD shaft, you still need to know how to compensate your aim for squirt, swerve, and throw when using English.

Dave

You have to know your cue (any cue) pivot bridge point, start with straight shot say 5 diamonds apart between CB and OB, and change your bridge location an inch every time, say you start at 7" from tip, then go to 8, and so on, until i would say 14 to 16" mark each bridge with a pencil, you will notice your deflection gets less and less as your bridge is longer. Another thing to keep track of is your tip contact of CB position make sure you are hitting it always same place, check chalk marks. Remember to always shoot with high right or high left and a bit hard this way you take other factors as swerve, throw due to stun,
Another factor is to know, as CB and OB got closer to each other deflection angle get smaller and smaller
Note most of pro have long bridge that is to get rid of deflection.
The smaller the tip the shorter bridge hand will be but more swerve at slow speed can be controlled, i shoot with 11 mm so i do not have to go too extreme to edge, and also comfortable bridge where deflection cancels throw due to English stun for most common shots.
Best of luck

Thanks to Dr. Dave he has all of that covered.

Sure you could get a LD shaft, and as Dr Dave said, there are advantages and disadvantages.
OR
You could use your current shaft and work on getting shape using less english so you don't have to adjust for as much deflection.

I'm not being sarcastic, I was there myself. I went and bought an OB1 shaft and used it and all the english I could muster for a few years and absolutely loved it. Then I came to the realization that there are always different routes to take. Whether it is using less english with a little follow instead of spinning it 4 rails with draw. I put the OB1 away and haven't looked back.

This isn't a criticism of LD shafts, your story just rang familiar with me and thought I might give you a different perspective and possibly save you some $$

It's not a deflection (squirt) problem.
When asked by a playing partner why his putts weren't going in the way he wanted them to, the great Lee Trevino promptly said, "Your aimer's off."
That is most likely your problem.

Hi Twinkle,

My name is Rick. I've been playing since 13 yrs. old & that was 46 yrs ago. I started using english almost immediately. I may get slamed, but this is what worked for me many moons ago. It is similiar to Mr. Wileys 3 part pocket premise. Let's say you are cutting a ball on the foot spot into the upper left hand corner pocket from down table say on the head string & one(1) diamond from the right side rail & you want to use right hand english (I almost never use 3:00 so lets say 1:30 or 4:30 tip hit) do not aim at the center of the pocket. Instead aim for the right side or maybe even the tit. Naturally the speed of the hit & the amount of english matter, but this is a good starting point from which to learn to feel the shot. For left side english on the same shot aim for the left side or tit of the pocket.

I have just this year began playing with LD shafts (McD i2 & OB Classic), but I had to sell a 'juiced', sanded down predator 314 Cat because I simply could not trust it, or I should say myself with it on long shots. It was TOO different. I actually felt like the ball started perfectly straight & then almost immediately swerved to the english side.

I would definitely suggest useing an LD shaft to anyone 'new' to englih. The guy I sold the 314 to has only been playing about 5 yrs. & he plays extremely better with it & he does not really utilize any side english at all.

I hope this is helpful & gets you a step forward.
Sincerely,
Rick
