I don't think there is a definitive right or wrong on this
topic. The way I see it, you are correct, and the term squirt has
been adopted in an attempt to distinguish and describe the action
of the cue ball when it is "deflected" off of the cueing line, by
the deflection (bending) of the cue stick from the cueing line.
Also, I noticed that in the video he mentioned a couple of
things that could also lead to confusion.
1 - He mentioned several great players from the past that
never used cues like predators. But I believe some of the older
cues had less deflection than predators. And, since the game
was mostly straight pool back then (he quoted Willie's run), most
shots had very little cue ball travel and/or english. Today, with
Nine-Ball being the most popular, there are different needs.
2 - He mentioned a rigid stick as having less deflection. To
this day I do not know for sure all of the variables involved
in producing or reducing cue deflection. I think it involves much
more than a function of rigidity vs. "whippyness". For example

Interesting material, but I think he has several things wrong. I think that squirt does not increase with elevation. I think that squirt does not change much with stick speed. I think that squirt is not closely linked to how stiff or flexible the shaft is. I think that the particular shot he chose to illustrate squirt is not visually convincing.Scaramouche said:
As for terminology, there are good reasons IMNSHO to call what the cue ball does "squirt." The cue ball is not deflected from its initial path -- that path is set by the direction and properties of the stick. To call it deflection is to ignore the standard definition in mechanics of the word. The word "squirt" is specific and unambiguous.
