Delrin Collets - Question

I thought I would start using Delrin Collets and have a couple of questions. I only do tip and ferrule work so I will only need collets for the shafts (Tip end)

- What angle do you use on the inside of the collet to match the shaft taper?
- Do you put anything under the collet when using it on the shaft in order not to hurt the wood?
- How many different sizes of collets should I make for shaft work?

All help / info is appreciated.

most shafts have little taper near the tip

so you need not worry much, just round off and radius all edges to avoid dimpling the shaft. And do not get a pet gorilla to tighten the chuck, some shafts are somewhat soft. You can measure your shafts with a mic and figure out pretty much what the taper is, but unless it is a conical shaft i doubt there is a need to worry much. I rarely see conicals, they are mostly used by billiard players, not so much in pool.

I have collets from 11mm-14 1/2mm, in 1/2mm incriments. I also use a piece of playing card between the shaft & collet...JER

I ordered mine from porper, quick and easy. Gets a little pricy though. I've been using them for years. .5 MM between collets is about right. If your making your own be shure to get the inside smooth or it could leave an impression.
