Your choice of shaft and ferrule/tip. Cost about $300.

Well i just got my brand new custom break cue from Bob Flynn at Denali cues.Four point Ebony Gaboon into a Purpleheart forearm, G-10 3/8x10 pin, AAA maple shaft with a G-10 ferule and a White Diamond tip. When i pulled it out of the packaging and wrapping i was instantly pleased. The cue is sleek and classy. Extremely clean points and lines throughout the cue. The finish is perfect. So i finally get a chance to smash some racks with it at my buddies house. I screw the cue together to a nice snug fit. The cue just has a great feel in your hands. I hit the first rack and instantly can feel power and solid hit of the cue. To break with this cue is truly effortless. I have hit with almost every break cue on the market and this cue tops them all hands down. Bob is a great guy to deal with and will accommodate any wants and needs with your cue. He had the cue done before the initial time given. And his pricing is great...better than most top break cues on the market. Id like to thank Bob for making such a great cue. And i strongly urge you to talk to him about a cue!

I'd be interested in knowing what the selling point of these cues is. How are they designed for breaking? I've used break cues that seem to have no thump to them, the rack kinda flops apart. Some break cues seems to direct the energy into the cueball and subsequently into the rack very well. Is it the placement of the weight? The material? I suspect a stiffer taper is advantageous in breaking, but I'm not sure. I'm interested in break cues if I can find a rack shatterer. I'm guessing I need a slightly heavier break cue since I don't generate cue speed very well.

The selling point is, according to the users, is that they flat "SMASH" the rack.
You had it 100% right when you said some break cues direct the energy into
the cueball and subsequently into the rack. The combination that does that
is a combination of materials, workmanship, weight and balance.
The shaft needs to be pretty stiff with the right ferrule tip combo. You cannot go wrong with purpleheart and ebony for butt materials. On my website you can find several customers remarks regarding Denali break cues.

Other than PH, is there another wood that works well with ebony for the break cue...?


I'd like to get one, but I'm having a hard time with the PH.

I'm just not a big fan.

Bocote and ebony or Goncalvo Alves and ebony. Same price. If you do not
like the PH shaft I recommend oak. Next best thing.
 
Is PH a particularly dense wood or tight grain? Why is it preferred for the shaft? How does it feel compared to other popular shafts?

I'm also not a big fan of PH. I just hate the way it looks, but I'm a practical man who would rather use what works best and let looks come in second place.
