Dennis Hatch

Hatch vs. Hennessee at SBE

Funny. I'm checking the mail. He did well for me this time. Four small bets, four small wins. I have never lost on him when he played. Never. Either he can always outrun the nuts, or he matches up like a bandit.

At SBE, Dennis unfortunately couldn't outrun the nuts against John Hennessee. :( (Dennis gave John the "9" in 10-ball, race to 15, if my memory serves correctly.)

I don't ever judge by one race. I'd take him in that for sure. I'm sure most would agree.

crawfish:

No, that was not a "judgment" per se -- rather, just a reminder that even the mighty Hatchetman is human. ;) But I gotta tell ya, "Hennessee from Tennessee" played really well in that match -- got out virtually every time. Dennis hung in there best he could, but methinks he was also tired from his matches that day.

He was 20 or 21 when he came in second to Buddy hall at the 1991 U.S. Open. At that same age he ran 365 balls in straight pool!

Yeah..he was 20 years old and took second to Buddy.

Buddy beat him on the HILL when Dennis missed a ball or played a bad safe in the last game.

How strong is that?

Jim Rempe said he was one of the most talented players ever..he just didn't have the work ethic. Same with boxing. He had a ton of natural talent - but didn't want to put in the work. This was said in an Accu-stats match I have of Dennis playing Nick Varner.

Excellent thread. I have always been a fan of Dennis. And thank you for the pictures JAM.... you always have some great photos. :)

Sounds like Dennis is alot like Danny Dilberto. Not throwing rocks but they both sound like everything comes pretty easily for them concerning hand eye coordination and athletics.Ken

Ken,

You're the only one who mentioned Danny so far. Would you guess how Dennis might have turned out if you knew Greg and Danny and knew they all travelled together? I think the dark and light side of Dennis began as soon as he hit the road. Someone mentioned Dennis is the toast of Upstate New York. I beg to differ. Perhaps Greater Buffalo (maybe) but no where else. His past reputation precedes him elsewhere. When you're young, you don't realize how your actions will follow you through life. I hope Danielle can continue to do for Dennis what Jen and Randy have done for a couple of my other pool heros. Truely a great talent, perhaps one of the greatest, wasted. Shares a lot of raw pool talent with Captain Hook but without the drive. Come to think of it, they share an aweful lot!
