Density of Thuya Burl?

Hi comrades. Would someone with a uniform piece of thuya burl be so kind as to weigh it and measure the dimensions so I can get a density estimate?

Perhaps if two pieces could be weighed and (accurately) measured, I could average the two. I am looking for a ballpark figure, but I could not find a source on the internet that I trusted.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas to all.

You might try looking it up on the woodexplorer.com. I would think the sg of a piece of burl could vary significantly, but I could be wrong. If someone weighs some samples for you, be sure to ask if those samples have been stabilized or not, because that will certainly effect the results.

Yes, unstabilized is what I am after.

A piece 1.5" x 1.5" x 18" dried Thuya turning square weighed 21 ounces.

Thanks Chris. Assuming the 1.5" is what it actually measured out to with some calipers, I will use your number with one or two others to get an average.

This got me to looking at my Thuya and I worked on cues all day. I cored a Thuya forearm. Glued veneers onto Madrone burl for points and planned out a nice burl wood cue. It has been a couple of years since I built a v-groove burl wood cue, so you got me motivated. Also seeing a non inlaid cue winning the cue of the year vote so far, when my much fancier almost 800 inlays cue only has a couple of votes has motivated me also.

Cool! One can never have too much motivation to build a cue. :)

I have some burly walnut that I'm itching to core and turn into a cue. I may inlay it with some super curly oak or some oak burl. Of course, I may just leave it alone on the outside.

To get back on topic, http://www.wood-database.com/wood-identification/#t does not list Thuya, but it gives lots of info for other woods. Of course, it may be listed under some other name that I am not familiar with.
