I was there sitting next to Billy Cardone, SVB was in the front row sweating it, John Mars, of course Stu💪. And lots of other great pool fans.

I remember it well, oddly I didn’t recall the result. But I remember talking with Billy and the vibe of the whole rail seemed like days gone by, had that pool room energy, Truman Hogue running the game and sorting the chips was great too. He is bank pool. JB in the booth in the video doing commentary with Mark is great.

That atmosphere that night was the last time I felt that vibe. I 🙏🏼 We get that again. It’s not gonna happen with race to 4 or 5 alt break pool with milk drinkers.

We need characters like Truman and the players in this game. And gambling action, cash at the end flashed to the guy who wins-no spoiler. That’s pool: not this clinical sterile alt break short race format. That’s so boring I can stand to watch it.

Me sweating my phone lol.

Anyways that was a special night. And it’s a great video. Thanks to Pat for releasing it.

Pool as it should be,

I couldn't agree more, it's like the life has been sucked out of pool. In retrospect it's like the life has been sucked out of life... No fun for you!

Thanks for the cool match.

Watched last night , what a crowd was there !
Quite entertaining, definitely much more involving than most .
Accu stats does an exceptional job on their videos

I had received this video many years ago on Pat's game show, he used to have at Sand Castles. They would ask a question during the game show and they would say "If you are the 9th poster you would win a free CD" I won quite a few of those free CD's. I chose this match and loved it. I loaned it to a buddy and never saw it again.

After winning quite a few CDs I felt like I owed Pat something and gave him a mini cue in 2015 at the Mosconi Cup. In 2017 I returned and ran into Pat again, he thanked me again and said he loved the cue.

I still have my mini cue, it’s safe and sound in my drawer. I see it everyday😍

Remember it well, sweating it with my close friend Jerry Briesath. I was a young man of just 57 back then.

The bank pool ring game is always one of the most entertaining events at the Derby. Before we give Truman Hogue all the credit, I'm pretty sure that it was started by Grady Matthews and that Truman took it over when Grady died.

What makes the ring game so much fun is the way the players approach it. In the midst of the competition, there's a lot of camaraderie and friendship on display and a lot of playful gamesmanship. Of course, it tends to get serious once it is down to two players. The ring game is usually on day eight of the Derby, and the comic relief it provides is always a well-timed breath of fresh air for the fans.

Finally, it was nice to see Al Metzinger sweating it in his signature argyle sweater. Al attended a lot of Derby City Classics back in the day.

You nailed it Stu. I was invited to many ring games with much stronger players when I was in college in the early 80's. I did not have much money and it showed at the end of the night. Now Money is not a huge issue and I have so much fun and play relaxed. To me it is a lot like playing small stakes poker, some times you get the cards and luck.

I have watched many ring games and for the most part the players have a chance to relax and have a great time together and put the serious matches between them on the back burner.

I love playing in ring games. Even with WAY the worst of it, I still enjoy it. I used to go get pumped up with a few extra dollars to go play ring games and try my best. I booked a couple winners but usually would step up and lose. Go fishing for easy $ and go donate again. That was fun for me. That was the most fun I had in pool thinking back. I’d have loved to play in this ring game. I can make a bank now and then.

That’s why I started this thread was to hear about ring games. If anyone has any stories I’d love to read them. Ring game is my favorite form of pool for fun. 1P for serious pool. I’m rambling but that’s cool. Had a long day.

Amen brother.

LOL, I'll be 64 in April.
Well in that case, I was wrong. I'll be 65 in April. Been getting a ton of spam mail about "great" retirement opportunities, and health care, lately. And, the .gov sent me a Medicare card a couple of months ago. I still can't figure out where all the years went.
