Derby Dispatches -- Day Deux.

10 on 10.

The 10-ball ring game on that 10-foot table was fascinating. Who is that Justin Hall? Didn’t he play down in Tunica?

My mom noticed that John Brumbeck changed clothes for the ring game. Sort of like Jackie Gleason freshening up in that pool movie. Except with a different result.

There was some commentary on whether banks is easier on the big table. I wonder too about one-pocket.

Why isn’t there a ball return on the big table?

Quotable Quotes.

Danny D: “Whatever John Brumbeck shoots is the right shot.”

“Most men are color blind.”

“When I was 23, Lincoln was president.”

“The first time I played for $100, I was shooting at the 10 ball and saw so many zeroes I missed.”

(Re John Morra.) “You gotta worry about the kid for a lotta years -- he doesn’t even have a girlfriend.”

“Whenever they jack up, I like the next guy.”

Freddy B: (Answering ‘does that ball bank?’) “Sure it does -- fat as a goose.”

(Describing a player down to his last chip in the ring game.) “He’s on the whipping post.”

“My favorite bank -- The Dixie Whistler.”

A question of morality.

Since safeties aren’t allowed in the ring game, what about when a player pretends to try for a cross-side when he’s really playing safe?

What about when a commentator recommends playing ‘softies’ as opposed to actually trying to make a bank?

Miscellany.

Since pool is such a hardscrabble way to make a living, I’ve reversed my position on players wearing sponsors' patches. It’s still ugly. But understandable.

It was heartening to see some of the top players in the world sitting ringside, watching the matches.

The quality of streaming is still marvelous. A few freezes, but that may have been on my end.

In banks, what does the term ‘stiffen it’ mean? (No need for any tweener humor, boys.) Is it inside spin to shorten the angle?

Freedom of the press is my life,

Sunny

P. S. This is a warning to certain of you boyos (and you know who you are). Last night they modded me. In the future I won’t hesitate to hammer certain unruly types. And rude ones too.

I believe to "stiffen" a bank means to use a combination of speed and spin to shorten the natural rebound angle. At least that's what I've always thought.

.

That is exactly what it is. inside spin and hit firmly, if needed. A firm shot can shorten the bank too.

Let's leave my tweener out of this.

Sunny, when you say Day Deux, don't you mean Dido, as in a screw up or, Fo-Paa? :)

'Dido' means pirate in Cantonese.....
...there's a few of them critters at this tournament.

Sunny, why the second thread?...I like the first one.:crying:

I figured She just softend up..so the weak at heart could digest it better..lol

I must say..I missed the country club toot..wink.

Draw will also shorten it, and follow lengthen it.

Stiffen means to shoot the bank so it come out straighter than the incoming angle would naturally have normally done with a combination of english and speed the rail cushion will hold the ball so it releases straight.

I believe it is the opposite, Taco.....
...draw transfers to top on the object ball, which makes it bank long.
...follow transfers to draw on the object ball, creating a short angle.

You're absolutely right.

My bad.
