i use microsoft image composer
for a "computerly challenged" guy like me, it's actually easy to learn
it's certainly not the best depiction of a cue,
but it's good enough to convey the design to my customer
last one i designed on it
first pic was just a rough drawing
second pic, after i detailed everything out more for him
what i like about this program i, i can insert pictures of the actual pieces of woods i intend to use , or i can show other woods that have finish on them, etc.
you may notice the mahogany linen butt & joint are from a previously finished cue

There was a guy posting rendered pics of cues - "which design should I choose" type of thread. His "pics" looked like the real thing - very very nicely done in Photoshop. I'm EDIT: "posting on" my phone so it's not to easy to search but the guy was from Denmark and asked about feedbacks on different desinges..
Photoshop is a awsome program but it's made by Adobe which $ucks when it comes to pricing and lisencing. Paying a hugh amount of money and not being able to install it on your laptop AND desktop without a online re-registration process is pure $hit.
A alternative is the open source program GIMP.
