Designing your cue

i use microsoft image composer
it was free on computer, part of office suite program
i didnt even know what it was or that it was even there till a computer geek friend of mine was working on my computer
she showed me the basics of it, relativley easy to use
what i like about it is, i can insert pictures of the actual woods to be used as in the first picture
notice the second picture is done with just colors , but the leather wrap is taken from a completed cue.

My friend and I are in the works of giving service of making 3d design of cues. Hope you can help us brain storm with this..

I don't always draw a design, but when I do, I draw them on graph paper too. Someone recently did a rough drawing on the back of a sheet from a set of house blueprints of what they wanted, and gave It to Me to go on. I went on that making changes that were actually doable, but still close to what he wanted, and compressed them down onto the graph paper. I have thought about using a simple program Like Brent is using, but I haven't really looked into as of yet.

To show the design, build scale rings and negociate with a customer, something like powerpoint or Impress(Open Office.org (free)) is good. I use that kind of stuff to discuss new products I wish to have made. I even made a scale model of a set of ringwork I was unsure of how it would look on the cue. That turned out well. With Impress, you can use images of a material as the fill pattern and get a pretty real impression when needed.
If you need or want basic CAD, Dassault Systems has a free 2D CAD they arre promoting. It reads my web address and trys to download in Japanese and then breaks, but I'll bet it is fine in America. The only concern is freeware is usually not ok for business use. There is other low priced CAD, though.
3D CAD is nice, but you would hate to add a $20,000 CAD license, I would think unless you are using it to drive a machine. Then, ProEngineer or other is said to be better.
