Detailed cue question... ignore if you're not into cues

I have the shaft that the AE came with. Don't like it as much as the southwest shafts.

Honestly though, I've never tried a southwest shaft on another butt, I'm just assuming that most of the playability is in the shaft.

I wouldn't recommend that assumption...

I tried the LD shaft thing for a few months and just recently abandoned it to go back to my southwest. The shots I had hoped to get better at, long shots with english and speed, never panned out for me. In fact, I got worse with the LD shaft as I lost confidence. I never did fully get used to parallel shifting to aim vs. pivoting with back hand english (I think that's what I do).

Anyway, for my LD shaft experiment, I had an AE butt where I had Ernie Martinez extend the wrap all the way down to the butt cap. I really like this part of my experimental cue and wish I had an extended wrap on my southwest. Needless to say, I'm not going to do that to my southwest, so I'm trying to find out who else out there makes butts using a southwest pin.

I have a specific design in mind where I have an extended irish linen wrap but also a matching screw in extension for long reach shots. Please suggest a cue maker I can contact to make me such a butt. I want to pair this butt up with a southwest shaft that I'm used to using.Thanks.

Oh and reasonably priced would be great.

Actually he uses the new radial pin for this joint....

The conical joint has been used in precision mechanical joints for a hundred plus years

I believe the pin is 3/8 ths...

IMO...you didn't give it long enough to get used to the LD shaft differences and nuances. That's ok. You're comfortable with the sw you've shot with and gotten used to.

You can still pivot with LD but you must use longer bridge ...roughly 6-8" bridge for maple shafts...and 10-12" bridge for LD shafts ...depending on how LD the shaft is.

None of that matters because you want to stay in your comfort zone. To do this, yes, u should stay with the sw shaft. However, even though much of the playability is in the shaft...there's still a lot of feel and confidence in the cue setup. You could have literally ANYONE build the new but, to sw specs including weight, balance point, joint, diameter, etc. BUT...you'll still know it's not your sw. Therefore, you'll still have to put a lot of time into the new cue before the confidence returns...just like the LD shaft, you may find yourself returning to the sw butt before you've rounded the corner on getting used to the new butt.

My opinion is...if you have a choice of 1. Getting used to a new butt...or 2. Getting used to a shorter wrap...I'd recommend learning to live with the sw the way it is. It will be the shortest learning curve, and cost you less confidence and money.
