Diamond Ball Polisher Question

On my Diamond dual platter unit, is it normal for the speed of the spinning platters to sometimes fluctuate between spinning slower and spinning faster?

I’ve noticed this the last few times I’ve used it, when polishing 15-20 sets of balls at one time. Even though I only use a few drops of Maguires on each ball, I’m guessing it might be caused by more friction, once the pads get a little damp? – Thanks

Wow! 15 to 20 sets at a time, that’s a lot of weight and friction when the cleaner is wet/tacky. I would think that is normal.

Perfectly normal to start out spinning slower than it is spinning once the balls have been cleaned. The slower spin is caused by the cleaner wax creating friction. As that friction rubs off, the platter will increase in speed. Once the platter hits full speed again plus about 30 seconds, its time to put in 8 more balls because those are done.

That friction from the cleaner wax applied to 8 balls is called "load". You'll notice after the balls have been cleaned, if you shut the unit off, then turn it back on again, it don't start out spinning slow, it goes right back to full speed again, that's because the "load" has been rubbed off.

With my home made diamond style polisher have to turn the speed up for the first 45 seconds or so, then turn it back down to finish. For me it's just a function of how I made it with the parts I had laying around my shop. I used a buffer I had laying around in place of the motor and pulleys diamond uses, and mounted a platter like on a diamond. Then made a sprocket similar to diamonds. I then found I needed to reduce the speed to make the balls randomly spin and not get hot. While not correct, I mounted a rehostat to be able to vary the speed. Because of this, there is not much power with the speed turned down and I have to turn it up a bit at first till the polish starts to dry out.
Wouldn't think that's a problem with diamonds unit as the speed is set by pulleys. You do have a double platter unit though which might put a little more load at first, although I would think it was designed for it.

When it comes to questions like these, I don't know why you just don't give me a call, and get the answers straight from the horses mouth😅

Just recieved my polisher too. Is the speed fluctuating because the sprocket is not stuck to the bottom pad?

I saw online that it's supposed to be free floating, so when the balls lift the sprocket slightly, the sprocket will rotate at a slower speed than the balls. If I lightly press the center of the sprocket to sit it flush with the bottom spinning pad it goes to full speed.

Is the sprocket supposed to made full contact with the bottom pad at all times? Or is this fluctuating speed a feature and polishes the ball in different patterns?

I’ve done 20 sets in a row a few times more. I use Maguires as well, after a few sets I use less. As it can build up when your doing lots of sets. I never noticed any change in the speed.

I did use the same amount on each set and noticed that I was getting a bit more juice in the polisher than I needed. The next time I did a big load of balls, these were old balls I was polishing-not just cleaning after a few hours play. So I was running them a long time on each side. I cut back on the amount of Maguires each set I loaded in. Occasionally skipping the Mags here and there. It builds up is my point.

My guess is your gumming up the plate and the friction is increasing as the excess Mag’s dries. I’ve spun a lot of balls and this is just a guess. But I’m pretty sure on this.

Use the normal amount on the first couple sets and then reduce it and find the equilibrium amount. Then add as needed on 10-20 ball set sessions. And you won’t gum up.

I also noticed I’d get s slight film on the balls if I had too much in it taking them out of the Mag side before I put them in the polish side.

Use less mags the more sets you spin and that should solve the issue.

Diamond tables-meh

Diamond ball polishers - best possible solution. I wish everything I owned worked so well. The mortal nuts.

Hope that helps. Less is more

Just call me, easier to explain on the phone.
