I wonder who makes up the tournament brackets? I noticed that there were tons of Taiwanese players and very few of them had to play each other. Maybe it's just me, but I wonder if it's fixed that way to give a Taiwanese player the best chance to win.

Hi Nat:

There was no conspiracy. The way the final 64 bracket is determined is based on how the players did in the earlier round. Fu had the best record at 7-0 with 35 games won 17 lost compared to Archer who was second with a 7-0 record also and 35 games won but 20 lost. So Fu was seeded #1 and Archer #2, you will see Fu at the top of the first 32 and Archer at the top of 2nd 32. There opponents had the worst records Davis was the #64 seed with a 3-4 record and 24 wins and Marcus Chamat was #63 with a 3-4 record but 27 wins.

So all 64 were seeded in this fashion. First by number of matches won, and in the case of ties the number of games won, if still tied then whoever had fewer losses got the higher seed.

Hope this lets you rest easier. LOL

Damn, I've been trying to pin something on them but I haven't been able to. I just get this feeling they really hate Americans (they probably do).

Nope, they haven't banned it yet, even though they have been warned.

Man some americans hate america. Timothy McVeigh in oklahoma and many democrates upset with the war and Bush. If we hate ourselfs what the hell do you think they will think of us????

People fail to realize that what is best for AMERICA does not have to be morally correct. Some feel stealing is wrong and some can look the other way if its in our national interest. Just like they did the indians, slavery & etc. All of which where acceptable at points in time but counter to our believes and religion.

This world has finite resources and just like in poker the table may start out with 5 players and 200,000 each for a total of 1,000,000.00. The only way any of the combatants gets more is at the expense of the other players and the only way the USA gets more is at the expense of other countries. JUST LIKE POKER. Unless you have a space ship and are capable of pulling natural resources through space to earth you better get used to it. THEIR IS NO SUCH THING AS FAIR: Capatilism will not allow it by defintion and our finite resources on this planet aid in the lack of fairness. SURVIVAL OF THE FITIST!

People need to get used to the new reality and either be more compassionate to our fellow man and give a little or live in a constant state or turmOIL and war over the finite resources on earth hurling through space at a milliion miles an hour. .

This kind of speculation comes up every year. The brackets are decided by the player's round-robin records. If you have a strong suspiscion of foul play, go through the records, compile your own brackets, and come up with a real argument, instead of trying to be sour grapes. The records in round-robins is no secret and if anybody played favours it would be caught already. The same speculation always comes when some people's favourite players don't do as well as they like. Give credit where credit's due, lots of Taiwanese players had to knock out each other as well. In fact, I think 3 or 4 Taiwanese players were knocked out by other taiwaenese players.

I'm at the opposite extreme. I love the way the knockout stage is seeded. Completely based on performance in the round robin and not on nationality or standing in the world of pool. It's the best way to do it! The cream rises to the top, and for now, the cream happens to be the nation of Taiwan, which, as Celtic correctly noted in an earlier thread, is the new Philippines.

You guys gotta give them credit, they have number of freaking world class players and they are just as good. Look at all the players that Wu beat, not only he got so lucky, he's freaking good too.
A lot of these Taiwanese players are a mystique to Americans and Europeans but in Asia they are just as highly regarded as in the Philippines. Yang came on top on the big 9 ball event in the Philippines and Chao won the 2000 WPC in Europe so make no mistake thay can win it outside. I know a lot people think that if you can make it in the US the you can make it anywhere and Filipinos have to go through that path to get respect but Taiwanese have proven that they don't have to.
Now I really wonder if they are good in money and some other type of pool like 1 pocket or the 15 ball rotation, the 8 ball or the straightpool.

1 pocket's not played in Taiwan. Rotation I don't think is played. 8 Ball is alright, Hsia beat Efren to win the gold in 8ball in the Asian games once. Straight pool's definately played in Taiwan. In fact, most players start out playing straight pool before comming to 9 ball. Many years back, a Taiwanese took 2nd place in the US Open Straight Pool Championships.

I agree 100%! Which is why america MUST pay for its crimes!!! hehe

but seriously, take a look at the G8 summit. Everyone's getting on board and giving the Kyoto protocol on greenhouse gases a chance -- everyone, except AMERICA! All because Bush feels it would kill american business. Well, I think big business could stand to invest in a little more in air-cleaning facilities. if smaller countries with smaller businesses can do it, why can't american business? I wouldn't go further into details because i know it's wasted on this board anyway, but one last thing -- I think Tony Blair is doing a great job leading the G8 into giving africa more aid and giving them debt relief. it's about time! and i think this should extend to other developing countries, as well.

Like king kong said, we have finite resources. it's time to spread the wealth a bit.....this would make good business sense, too. the more people we help get out of poverty, the more people could get to afford to buy american goods. makes sense, correct? and maybe we'll see more world-class pool players coming out of countries like tanzania, ethiopia, or upper ghana.
