Did I make a bad call as Tournament Director?

I look at both concessions and the 'ol 'unscrew-ur-cue' move as nothing more than lame moves by lame players. Last-resort moves by those that can't win otherwise. Anything to jar you.

I agree except for receiving concessions. Pool players are "forged in fire" are they not? Shooting at the winning ball is usually a higher pressure shot. Even for a pro.
It most certainly is. All the more reason to accept a freebie if they want to provide it.
Receiving concessions does absolutely nothing for my psychological, mental, emotional, or spiritual strengths.... which are as important to my playing abilities as the mechanical part of the game is. I would rather finish the game for the character building experience.
There's two ways to look at this. An attempted shark from your opponent, or a misguided effort by them to gain some kind of advantage at a later time. Although both are psychological in nature. Your battle tested 'character' determines how you perceive it. Having 8 money balls conceded will not lower my odds of making the 9th, (choose your set length). The last shot hasn't changed. The only way earlier concessions messes with your mind is if you dwell on it when you're shooting the last one. No better way to fortify your mental, emotional or spiritual strengths then to deal with the worst of it, if that is how you opt to look at it.

Personally, I look at concessions as a free pass on all the horrible things that can happen on any shot. Miscues, bad rolls, brain farts... etc. If someone wants to eliminate those possibilities for me. I'm all for it.

The best trick I learnt during my years of play is compartmentalizing drama. Live it in the moment, and forget about it in the next.

All I was trying to say is.... keep your freebies to yourself. I don't want them.

"Keep your freebies to yourself, I don't want them." I think there is a sixties or early seventies protest song there somewhere!

Aside from all of the good reasons already given, conceding the last ball or balls kinda corrupts the integrity of the event. Too, I haven't seen a shot that can't be botched even by a top pro. I have seen a top player miss a shot they could be expected to make over 99 times out of a hundred. The crazy thing was that then his opponent missed the even easier shot left behind!

Allen Hopkins put together a ridiculous made for TV event. Best I recall it was scored like a skins event. The game was seven ball and the incoming player got ball in hand every time somebody missed. He held at least two of these events with top players of the time. Some of the games went all the way around until the breaker got another chance to win! There was serious money at stake although no doubt everyone got a paycheck. Most of us would bet pretty big that the breaker would not get a second chance with rules like that but it happened multiple times.

There is no getting around the conclusion that we have all conceded games we would have won and had games conceded to us that we would have lost. Not the way the game is designed to be played in my opinion!

the more rules you add to things the more people get to take advantage of them.
a person should have the right to concede a game at any point.

and in a tournamet which is a game of rules you should be fine using any rule to your benefit.

While I don't make a habit of concessions anyway. The one circumstance when I don't agree with a person's 'right' to do so, is when playing team events. Horribly bad form to concede a rack in any match that includes teammates. You want to concede a game that only effects your personal results...?..., fine. However hurting your teammates by doing so is flat out bs, imo...

When I was learning to play Racetrack Rick told me, "You give them the first money ball then Never give up another, they will be expecting it." The long distance shark.
On one occasion in a 9 ball tournament my opponent got straight on the 9 ball but close to the rail. We had been bumping heads in the little tournaments for a long time and played even. When Jimmy addressed the 9 ball he jacked up! Eliminating any thought of concession. When he missed it he raked it and scornfully said, "I thought that was a gimme Greg." My reply was, " You must be playing a different game. I'm playing 9 ball."
The funny part is I never gave him a ball. His crew must have done it 🤷 a lot. I was seated behind him and still and silent.
It was Jimmy that raked the decider 9 , that allowed me to get to the point match. Which I won! I was so nervous.🤷oh well.
