Did you ever know someone who was good at just one type of game?

There was a guy around here who only played 6 ball, played anyone (ANYONE) who came through, but he would never leave a few mile radius. He got played by a lot of champions and they didn't get there.

Have you ever run into someone in your town who plays one game and only one game, payball, 3 ball, (take out the mainstream games) golf on a snooker table, spot shots, whatever it was, like to hear about it.

I knew a guy that was a terror on an eight foot table. He was decent on a box, less on a big table, but almost unbeatable on an eight footer.

That is as close as I have.

Can't say I know guys that will only play one game, but I will say I know guys that will hang out in "their" pool hall and play just about anyone. These guys know the table, love the surrounds, have a crowd and never player anywhere else. This type of player will only play when all their demands are meet.

Sure, I've known quite a few players that were only good at 9 ball. That's not to say that they couldn't play other games if they put their minds to it, it's just that they had no real desire to play the other games, their hearts weren't in it. There was one young player I remember awhile back who could play at least 'A' level 9 ball. On rare occasions he'd play 14.1 just because no one was around to play 9 ball. He would have trouble beating a C+ player. He'd miss a shot and say "I would NEVER have missed that shot in 9 ball!" It was only because his heart wasn't in it.

im an 8 ball bar box player. im ok at 9 ball but there is a definite drop off from 8 ball to 9 ball.

I once knew a guy that would place an object ball against the long rail, at the foot-spot line, and the cue ball against the same long rail, at the head-spot line. This was a proposition shot; he would guarantee you that, no matter the table (i.e. if the side pocket's knuckles were sticking out or not), he could shoot the cue ball past the side pocket into the object ball and pocket it into the corner pocket.

Of course, he was masse'ing the cue ball with inside english, gently curving the cue ball away from cushion (and away from the side pocket's knuckles), back into the object ball. But the amazing this was, no matter the table, he could execute the shot on *any* table, ten out of ten times!

Yet, if you engaged him in any kind of game, even a "C"-level player cleaned the floor with him.

Now some players play trap games, some they may have made up. A guy we used to call Crazy Bruce played one pocket - 9 ball a game he invented. He would play champions this game and usually win. Bruce was a good player in general but it was amazing how top players could not beat him at this game. I am talking about players like Mike Caralla and Danny DiLiberto. The gaff was it was all Bruce would play and he bet high. Players would take a shot hoping to tap into the bankroll he carried. There are other stories about Crazy Bruce I am sure a few may want to add. They didn't call him crazy for nothing. I once saw him break a cue over his own head. Another time he punched himself in the face so hard his eye swelled shut and went all black in like a few minutes.

That reminds me of a story in the book "Playing Off The Rail", there was a guy in Chicago I think who would bet anyone in a lagging contest. In the book it said he beat Billy Incardonna 3 lags in a row at $100 a lag and then Billy quit. I think it was said that the guy couldn't play pool at all. I don't know how true the story is though because a few things in that book are made up.

I know a couple guys like that, that only play golf and thats it....and they do play that one game pretty strong

Thanks for the replies, liked the one about lagging.

Forgot about the one where there is a guy who would just hang around the pool room and break for other people. Strongest break around, and when people would match up they would specify that someone else had to break for them, he would step up and break, sit down, break, sit down. lol.
