Dieckman cues

I think he just said that so he would not have to be precise in his work LOL If someone that did not know him saw one of his cues, they would think it was built by a beginner.

God has some explaining to do about this perfection thing, cancer, war, baldness, Yugos, floods, rain during vacations, rap music...

Pretty dam strong beginner to have taught more cuemakers the ways than any other.....and many are very well known. You don’t think all those carom players and trick shot guys wanted one of his cues because he had pretty ****ing hair do ya?

Probably in hof and selected with a dozen makers to be in the Smithsonian display pre2011 because he had all that pussy in his house.....

Go get you a something like a carmelli with ivory vomited all over it you should be happy with that masterful tasteless ugly shit.

Dennis’s cues tell a story about himself the player and the wood......that is very rare for many and I’ll use his own words in describing it “wood butchers”.

Money didn’t just get you a wand from the man.....he wasn’t for sale you had to earn that wood and his work.

There’s not another maker alive I believe that so many tears will be shed when they go as has been with the passing of a wild haired strange old man wearing tape measure suspenders.

For years while everyone was sleeping around following a crowd Dennis was beating his own drum in his way and did just that till he parted this place.

Tho totally different in just about every way I always found to Dennis to be the same exact type as another famous wood worker Sam maloof...he never got why people paid so much money for his work but what he didn’t see was everyone wanted a piece of him to hold onto it just came in the form of chairs and tables....Dennis was captivating and stoically believed what he believed, and stuck to those guns till his last breath, most ain’t got that kind of spine and sway when the breeze changes letting others dictate what they should and are gonna do.

One of my favorite possessions is a titlist forearm that has some cracks below the points Dennis had turned down years ago....and a little bundle of maple for butts wrapped in duct tape with sharpied address but no sender name (someone may have known name at post office and stole the wood he said lmfao) and my name and address on it. He was weird as **** and so am I and I loved the man for it....showed many of us it’s ok to be...and should all be....strangely different.

At least for a beginner lol he was never a copiest.....he single handedly kept the saw art of vignuax Alice to live on when it was basically at deaths door.....and man I love that cuz I get tired of looking at all these cues that seem to look the same over and over and over. What an loss of craft that would have been if not for food like that.

I could keep going on all day but I got a river to sort.

Very cool, Bob. As I was thinking of Dennis today, I took that 3 piece cue that he originally made for himself for his trip to Vietnam in 2005 as you reminded me and then sold it to Bob Byrne inscribed, out for a spin on a 3c table. I think Dennis was standing over my shoulder in approval...but he would say occasionally "wrong shot!". :)

Another Dieckman Trivia ... WE know their name and what they mean to Dieckman #! Student and #1 son he didn;t have. But here what Dieckman really thought

dd8.jpg

A #1 Student who would carry on the Butterfly Butt Legacy and the # 1 Punisher of his cues

Keeping with this thread here another Dieckman cue I have... built to Sang Lee spec.

dieckman01.JPG

Later I will show my BHQ Cue ... Dieckman #2 Student who also carrying Dieckman Butterfly Butt Legacy ... Burnt Pizza cue.

When I called Dennis for the first time, I was prepared to buy one of his cues. I expected the conversations would be: OK, You send me money and I'll send you photos and prices of what's in inventory or we can start talking about what you have in mind. WRONG!!

The conversation was more like a job interview that lasted 45 minutes, talking about all kinds of stuff. Occasionally even talking about cues. Apparently I passed all his criteria somewhere in the middle of the interview and he said "I think I will sell you a cue." Then we talked about a bunch of other things, then back to cues. In Sales, the last one to speak loses. Dennis always had the last word, so I not only got a cue but it was the start of a long friendship

I believe I saw that cue in his shop 10 or more years ago.

Here a quote from Jamison back in 2008 about DD and his Masse Cue

Mike Massey is the guy that told me about Dennis Deickman. At the time I was using a cue I had found in a ditch. He said if you ever meat him tell him he has to make you a masse cue.

Well that went over like a brick I said sir your gonna make me my masse cue...Dennis said no. I said yes, he said no. I said look when I am the best in the world next year, you'll make me a cue. He said fine as soon as you are the best next year I'll make you a cue and so....He did.

Was he a first generation immigrant?-Just wondering why his name is pronounced differently than it is spelled?

That forearm has a funny little story behind it. Was for one of our memebers Sev, whomlives in Tennessee. I was supposed to buy it from him long time ago, when I came back from Boston I stoped by and he went grab it told me it was a full butt with cracks below points sent to Dennis to turn into a cue and it was turned down cracks repaired and cut some off bottom and he get it in the mail just like that 🤣. It was just maybe last year I remembered finally to ship Mark the money for the 3/4 butt.

Hindsight is a son of a betch....was trying to be a grown up and do my job instead of listening to the excited kid in me saying “man screw this job....get your cameras pack your truck and take Dennis on that road trip to Michigan”.......sadly the jaded adult took over....wish that sob had kicked rocks.....what a loss of possibilities

Dennis and I started our long conversations during our big flood down here in south Louisiana in 2016....and him speaking to me when literally my roof had caved in on my fookin place, was one of the few things that kept my head on straight whilst doing recovery work for others, getting rickets from Red Cross food and sleeping under my workbench at night......I had freaked out despite my friends saying I was only being paranoid.....and was able to slam move all my wood and dif things I had all over my place into my “shop” room prior to the ceiling collapse (paranoid my asss I told em) lol....and I’d crawl through that fox hole to sleep in the crowded sanctuary in shambles.

I am that “impoverished” Cajun cue builder his second to last post was about on his fb page lmao.....tho I had money at the time....money wasn’t what any of us really needed. We all needed a little lift up....I sure got it.

From Dennis:

“yeah....but can you bet a 70 year old man who has better eye hand coordination now that he has stopped drinking and hallucinating a number of years ago.....some day i hope to meet you kid....i think you are a rare bird and i am a collector......of rare birds”

I myself have always seemed to have this penchant.

Oh and by the way Jamison, the deekamon implored a keeb to go squirrel hunting with ya....so I’ll be bringing the pea shooter some sunrise down the road. Dam fine eating in a gumbo.

that vest is far more impressive

I need to show the giant cross stitch my mother had to design beforei was a teen she must have worked on it off and on for 4-5 years. Its like 30x24 or so and is a pic of my great grandfathers store in Grosse Tete, LA. Old wooden store big cococola sign on side huge oaks surrounding....I think that long winded sob was the last one she ever did lmao....i hope i live to see the day where we go back to liking and wanting and demanding things of quality instead of being robbed by deals and sales for plastic junk.

Here's my cue Dennis made for me in 2010. What a great guy he was! RIP Deek!!
We met at the SBE in Valley Forge and had a great time over those few days.
He made a 3rd shaft for me for pool as well as two for billiards.
