Different materials for cue (fiber) pads?

Hi friends,

I have a question. The cue fiber pads or only cue pads I know are made of leather.

I've read that there are pads of other kind of material.

So, what is the best cue pad? The one made of leather or made off a kind of fiber? If you use them, what kind do you prefer?

Can I make myself some pads by cutting them out of a piece of leather? I know this is a stupid question. I only wanna know if there's any special issue to consider.... like the hardness and thickness of the leather (or other material)...

You can get leather from all kinds of places. I like to get a lot of it at garage sales. You can get old leather jackets or ladies purses and just cue them up. I got an old brief case about a year ago and was able to cue two pieces suitable for cue wraps. Why would you do something like that you would ask. Well, it is cheap but mostly in that case it was very unusual. The leather was the perfect thickness and had an aged look that was beautiful. I put it on an old joss and the look was really unique.

Well, but do we talk at cross-purposes?

I reckon the pad between cue tip and ferrule, not a cue wrap...

I have never heard of pads being made from leather. Any pad here ( usually black or red) are made from fibre

Ok. Sounds obvious.

So, where can I usually find such a material to make them of myself?
How do you do it?

Da, because you mentioned leather I assumed you were referring to burnishing pads. Most tip pads are a fiber or a kind of phenolic. If you are just adding the pad to protect the top of the ferrule such as with an ivory ferrule you can make them yourself from many different things. I have made them in the past from formica chips, (samples) you can get free from Home Depot. After installing just face off the decorative surface and the remaining is a dark brown hard fibrous material that looks great and works perfect.

I have also tried different kinds of gasket material but it didn't work. Over time it crushes and spreads out. There are no real rules with this stuff. A lot of things you do you can come up with yourself. Take for instance the samples in your picture. It is probably just a common material that someone found a new use for, in this case cue pads.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for. But I only need a few (around 10 of every color and if it's possible 10 yellow ones).

Atlas doesn't sell to end customers like me, I've already ask.

Conventional cue tip pads are made from vulcanized fiber, also known as fish paper. I don't know if it is available in other colors, but try googling it by the different names.

The pads we use on our OB Cue Shafts is actually, Carbon Fiber, a completely different material. We have to buy it is sheets and machine the pads from it.

Thanx for your effort.

I try my best with google......

I make my own out Linen Phenolic rod, the same material used for jump break ferrules. I used them for Ivory Ferrules maily but the material is cheap and it works great.
