Different wood types play different ( butt ) ?

Hello,

I Know shafts play like the way they are build, and depending tip/ ferrule and such ...
But my question is about the butt .

1. do different wood types affect the way the whole cue plays ?
in like, i have ordered a ebony cue from Bd cues, but would the same cue built in for example birdseye or curly mango, play different then from ebony ?

2. does the construction of the butt affect play ?
in like, i know the but is 6 piece constructed, but would it play totally different if this would be in one piece, or three piece, ten piece ...

3. i have no experience on custom made cues but will the joint affect play, i read a lot about g10 pin, radial, uni loc... does the pin affect the play ?

thanks in advance for answers/suggestions
Kind Regards
Kris

there is an 'ASK THE CUEMAKER' forum
http://forums.azbilliards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22
you might want to ask your question there

ask the cuemakers

Yes, different woods will make the cue hit differently. How much differently is hard to say. Everything else equal, ebony will hit differently than maple.

I think it's more difficult to say how the construction affects the hit. Cuemakers would be the experts on this. Best hitting cues I have are one piece cues, but they also have different woods than the other cues I own.

The pin will affect how the cue hits, but again could be very hard to tell the difference. I tend to play with 5/16 pins more than anything else. I've owned 3 cues with the G-10 pin and haven't liked any of them, but again that could be due to other factors.

In the end, a cue's hit is the product of many factors, and if you change only one thing, it can be hard to notice a difference. Change several things and you will probably notice.

P.S. - there's tons of info to search for in the Cuemaker section.

hi,

the wood in the forearm has a great impact on the sound. i play an uncored ebony forearm, the sound is completely different from a maple or wenge or whatever forearm.

imho the greatest factors are: Joint (material, pin, wood to wood or not...) forearm(sound, vibration), full splice or with an A joint (that might be the most "individual" point, some say they feel the difference, others say "bullsh*t")

Krisha, I have some short to the point answers for you.

I would talk with your cuemaker more about these questions before the build.

The answer to all questions is yes.
But how much the hit changes will still be determined by how the cuemaker does those things. If he cores the Ebony with Maple it will play in between Maple and Ebony. That would be a much better playing cue than a solid Ebony forearm, for my tastes. But others really like that hard flat hit that non cored Ebony gives. As mentioned already, talk to the cuemaker and the two of you can decide what is best for your style of play.

THIS is good open minded advice, I have two main playing cues one is cored straight grained camatillo and the other is a solid ebony forearm. The cored cue feels 'softer' but I like them both anyway.
