Different wraps

There are many different wraps: linen, leather, lizard etc. My (stupidish) question is that are for instance lizard wraps always made out of lizard ? Or are they just regular leather (pig, cow ?) with a print made on it ? Is it really true that some exotic animals' skins are used as wrap material ? Where do these cuemakers get lizard skins, do they have their special lizard supplier ?
What are the most exotic wrap materials you guys have seen ? Hairy Tarantula skin wrap ? Panda wrap ? Cactus wrap ? ;)

Wow. Don't know how these would feel and maybe I wouldn't like to know at all. I prefer my smooth pig skin wrap.

Stingray ? Shark ? Come oooon... How about jellyfish... or catfish ?

It's a cross over from the boot industry.

Ah, thanks for another piece of information. I didn't know that. In this corner of the world people have only linen or leather as their wraps.

Btw, the "ultra" leather wrap in Predator 2's feel bad, they're too soft for my taste. Any idea if they aren't genuine leather or just some cheap leather ? The feel is totally different on my leather wrap.

I think part of the problem with ultra leather is, it's to thick. I changed one once, I'll not change another.

shark

i had a Joss S/P about a year ago...It had a wrap that was shark skin.....you want to talk about hard on the hands.......

Pig skin is the way for me.......

I just recently had a Snakewood Gina cue and a Snakewood Mottey cue done with genuine Alligator wraps. They are the most stunning wraps I have ever seen.

Leather wraps

I guess I am the minority on higher end cues. It took me a while to get a Gina cue to my liking without a leather wrap. I guess, I could have picked up one from Ernie but I am like most of society and want it immediately. I picked it up at the Derby City Classic, it was brand new.

I do not like any leather wraps, but it seems most higher end cues now have them. Linen for me.

So cuemakers, any issue with going to Linen from a originally Leather wrapped cue?

Thanks
Ken

Some leather are much thicker than linen wrap.

To answer a couple of your questions. There are pigskin wraps with all kinds of exotic prints on them. There are also real Lizard which I prefer the feel of, provided it is Java or Ring Tail. I carry a bunch of different blanks on my cuesmith site. I carry some that are not on there also. Python and Ring Tail Lizard are the most exotic wraps I have used.

Got some pictures.

I just had these done within the last few weeks, so no I don't have any pictures. But funny thing is, the guy who did the wraps for me supposedly contacted YOU for the the skins. I recall him telling me you didn't have access or that there would be trouble skyving (sp?) down the skin. Apparently he found the materials out west.

Anyway. I'll try to get pictures and have them posted.

Ive seen a couple exotic skinned wraps that didnt hold up too well over time. One was an aligator it was fading and turning white in some areas another wrap I saw was a snake skin (not sure what kind) and it was doing similar things. Are these types of things common for exotic skins?

Can't speak for gator, but I have put on a lot of snake skins. Snakeskin needs to be finished over and totally sealed or the scales will wear off in a hurry.

Yes Sir, he did, but if it's real gator, I'd love to see it.

yes sir it is indeed real gator, and apprently it is not very difficult to work with. I can put you back in touch with rolando if you would like to find out where he got it. the vendor charged him $450.00 for a 3foot by 12 inch piece or could be ordered $180 choice cut 13 inch by5 inch (not exactly sure of these dimensions) for just one cue.

Anyway, the wraps are stunning, and I have had tons of people who have admired the wrap only, not realizing that they were holding cues each in excess of $5,000.00, go figure.

Thanks. I know where he got it, I just never saw one on a cue. Are you going to the Turning Stone event.
