I recently purchased a beautiful John Davis fullsplice butt. (ebony into maple with a second splice of maple in the handle area.) I will be turning the blank over to my cuemaker shortly. I planning to have him build me a fairly plain oldschool-looking cue. Similar in proportions and appearance to a Szamboti or Balabushka. 4 maple windows maybe. No inlays in the points.

Here's the problem. How far up the forearm should I start the wrap? The lower portion of the Davis splice is as sharp and pretty as the upper points. To show it off though, you would have to start the wrap about 3 inches closer to the butt. The cue no longer has that old school look. I think the old "masters" must have routinely covered up the bottom portion of the splice in order to put the wrap where it would be most useful. I'm guessing. Would appreciate any thoughts you may have. I need to get this sorted out before I talk to my cuemaker.

The only way to get that bottom of the points look you want is to add a butt sleeve to the end of the cue. That would also allow you some fancy ring work if desired. Otherwise starting the wrap 12 to 14 inches from the joint is your only decent options.
 
I would keep it old school. 12in or 12.5in forearm. 12in or 12.5in handle And 4.5in butt sleeve and butt cap area.

If you search Davis blanks someone thought it would be cool to show off the second splice above the wrap and it was a terrible idea IMO. And cue cue maker that did it hated it and wished he could get it back And fix it.
 
You might want to get with your chosen CM on this rather than relying on the opinion of whoever happens to be passing by.
I know that if you brought this cue to me, armed with all the opinions and suggestions you're likely to get from here, telling me you want it done this or that way because so & so on AZB said so, I'd be politely telling you to let so & so do it. CMs are funny that way. Either you trust your CM or you don't. Your post suggests that you don't, at least the way I read it.
Chances are he's been doing this a lot longer than you have.
Allow him the dignity of his experience and intelligence.
