Dime or nickle

my thought for what its worth

Glad you see where I was coming from. The other day there were 4 threads about Paul Hunter's death running at the same time posted within an hour of each other.

I know there's a million threads about this stuff because I've searched the forum myself before and since joining. I didn't need to start another thread because there's already a million posts on the subject of tip preference, toip hardness, tip radius, favorite tip.

The search feature works great if you actually use it, and it would save on bandwidth as well.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Based on your analogy and philosophy as stated above after a period of time there would be no further need for someone to pose hardly any questions since over the time of pool or for that matter any sport or topic most (possibly not all due to new tecnology ! ) questions would have been asked and answered ! but let's consider this, perhaps, not always, but perhaps some one new with a new perspective just may say something fresh from a new point of view that made all of you seasoned been there! heard that before ! veterans, look at an old problem with a new perspective! :) Think that this might be a possibility? I am 58 been playing for over 40+ years but you know what I learn something new almost every day ! and the days I do not ! IMO! are wasted time on this earth !
Just something to think about! Peace!

I haven't heard that one since I lived in Guelph. I think you make a very good point about having a look around at previous threads before starting a new one. I have seen this many times, but have just come to accept it as part of the forum environment.

Personally, I am more of a nickel man when it comes to pool cues, but always played with a dime on my snooker cue. With the thicker pool cue shaft, the nickel shape seemed to feel more comfortable. Spin and control were never issues, so I have just left it at that.

I would like to add that David Brown is a very good guy with whom I have spoken on and off for several years. I am glad to see him here.

Thats all good and fine........ but when the hell is Chinese Democracy going to be released?????? :D

I used to use a nickle, but I like to work the cueball out on its edge alot of the time, and have found that a dime radius keeps the tip on the ball better for me with my stroke.
That said, the shape of the tip on your cue should reflect how you play.... if you tend to stay with the center of the cueball more, a nickle or larger will be best, more contact area and less chance of unwanted sidespin. Dime shaped tips are better suited for more than a tip to 1.5 or even 2 tips worth of english, as it matches the curvature of the ball better and tends to avoid some unwanted miscues.

I don't really see much of an issue with a redundant question like this.

Sure it's been discussed before but now it's buried 200 pages deep and never seen and never really responded to anymore so more info is no longer added to it.
I think certain topics that have no decisive answer, or have no swaying on either side of the fence can cause more headache than benefit. Men vs. women, smoking vs. no smoking, bar boxes vs. nine footers, 8-ball vs. 9-ball, snooker vs. pool (gasp).

Everytime the nickel vs. dime thread comes up, it's fairly obvious that most people who give their opinion didn't bother reading anyone else's response from the last 500 times it was brought up. That is, the majority stick to whatever religious beliefs they brought to the dance and claim everyone universally agreees. So, I'm not sure what's beneficial or not beneficial.

Personally, I don't measure my curvature. It's curved. It's round. I shape once. I have no idea to what radius. If my tip doesn't mushroom, I never shape it again. Haven't in many years. I heard it first from Deno Andrews (in 1997 or so) and I've been on that bandwagon ever since. Deno gave a good tidbit that put me into that thinking, rather than just some handwaving. He said to notice every time you go to shape it if it's the same shape prior to shaping the last time. Mine was. Everytime. My tip was trying to tell me something. So, I left it alone.

Today, I don't even touch it with a shaper or sandpaper, even if I happen to miscue. I believe Deno does touch it up if he miscues. Pool chalk is made of sand. If it isn't abrasive enough to cure a miscue spot, I figured it's not doing its job.

Here's something to think about, there are no "fresh" perspectives when it comes to tip radius, it's personal preference.

What are you talking about?. I'm giving him access to hundreds of responses to the subject he's inquiring about, saving him time and doing his legwork for him.

I took the time to do a search, filter through the results and post them in this thread. You guys will give him the same cookie cutter answers that you gave on the other dozen dime/nickel threads. I'm saving the guy time and cutting to the point.

Where exactly did I bite his head off?. David should use the search feature, everyone should before starting any thread. I'm not a moderator, and I'm not trying to be, I'm giving him some help.

F me gently with a chain saw.

EDIT: BTW, I'm also new to this forum, one month today. Thanks for giving me leeway, glad to see it only works one way.

3.5 inches/per second. That's how fast a chainsaw goes through flesh and bone, just an odd statistic I learned while taking a chainsaw course for work. I guess that would be a fast ____ .

Speaking of fast I guess I was fast in taking your head off, and for helping the guy no less. Sorry. I guess instead of seeing the value in what you posted I percieved that you were scolding him for not looking it up himself.

Anyways, I hope you'll forgive me for coming at you with a chainsaw and hey....... welcome(belatedly) to AZ.

My comment was more meant in general than any particular topic such as tip curvature. Every forum has their RTFM crowd just like every forum has their members who instigate fights and every forum has their redundant posts, is just part of life on the net.

I don't know if I totally agree though, some threads discuss things such as deflection and tip sizes/curvature while others do not. Some discuss contact point size while others do not. Some are just a list of peoples personal preferences. Each one however was a discussion about tip curvature and size and were independant threads and some of those comments, accurate or not, may never have been made if we just searched and ended it at that.

It keeps the forum's heart pumping and that's good for all of us.

12 years in production and counting. If it ever gets released it could end up being rock and rolls most long awaited flop. The G & R audience has grown up and may not give it the time of day when released.

Well I guess that point went way over .....

Perhaps that will get through and make sense :) to some folks on here!

I got your point, but clearly you missed mine. I wasn't talking about across the board subjects or sport, just the particular topic of tip radius.

There has and never will be on one conclusive answer on the matter of tip radius, therefore it's futile to ask these question over and over again.

What's been said is what will always be said. The words may be different, but you can count on them only creating more confusion and arguments.

"Thats all good and fine........ but when the hell is Chinese Democracy going to be released??????"

Given that, in my opinion, Appetite was one of, if not the, greatest rock albums ever released, Democracy can take another decade and I doubt it will hold a candle; especially considering that half of what made Guns great, Slash, will not even be a part of it. I have been a huge fan since 1986 and have tried to keep "in the know" as to what has been going on. However, I prefer to keep the memories from when they were the greatest and let everything since go.

Wowie,

I should have known better, sorry everyone, for not searching thorough enough.
Thanks for setting me straight on that, its all good & I can relate.

Also thanks to everyone that voiced their opinion, very helpful.

I will try the search engine more often.

One thing that I have seen the different knife forums that I hang out at is when there is a topic that is often asked over & over they make a "Sticky" that keeps it at the top & it helps the new people with FAQ's. Just an idea.

I am learning a lot here & am having a great time.

Welcome to AZB David!

Like many topics that are debated/discussed continuously on here, it often comes down to personal preference. Trade-offs happen with each choice. My tips happen to be 12.5mm to 13mm. Kinda like people, each tip and shaft combo is a bit unique.:)

BTW I do have 3 Arno Bernard, boar tusk custom knifes and way too many single lockbacks.
