There was a company that manufactured a cover for pool tables, with specialized padding, that allowed the surface of the cover to be even with the rails, for the purpose of using it as a dining table. They used to advertise in the pool mags all the time, but I haven't seen them in a long time. Maybe someone else will remember them.

where you bought the table. They should have them. My brother bought a table cover for his 8' he bought last Xmas.
He also keeps a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood that can be layed on top of the cover and covered with table cloths for buffet style dining in his home.

The problem is leg room under the table. Pull a chair up and see if you fit. Otherwise, you will need something that hangs out over the edge.

I made mine from three pieces of 3/4" 4 X 8 cabinet grade maple and four 2 X 4s cut to fit. It took about one hour with a circular saw and a saw guide. One 2 X 4 is placed at each end of the table and one 2X4 under the places where the plywood pieces meet. The whole rig simply sits on the pockets of a Gold Crown III. We use a standard leather table cover and a table cloth for dining. We use it for holiday gatherings. Because we use a leather table cover I did not have to finish the sides of the table pieces.
Later I made benches to fit from the same cabinet grade maple with iron on oak tape. The whole thing is finished with Mahogany stain and wipe on polyurethane. The table leafs are stored under the table and the benches are used in various places through out the house and the pool room.

This setup cost me about $200.00, it seats 12. The leather table cover was another $100.00 or so.

The first time I made horizontal supports. They did not work too well. The second time I made supports that run the length of the table as can be seen. These are 2 X 4s with half inch pieces added to make the height two inches. I made the 1/2" add ons with a table saw. It is no big deal.
If you look close it looks like the table top is slightly above the table rails. That iss because they rest on the pocket facings. Protects the table rails and the whole things is stable with the leather cover holding it all together. No addition fasteners were needed. Not sure if I shim the edges where they meet. I may use construction shims but I won't know till I put it togehter again this Thanksgiving.
The table pieces are 65" X 39". You can see where I store the table pieces under the table in the photo. There was no need to finish the table top as it is always covered by leather when it is on the table.
The benches are 48" X 14". 1.5" foam rubber was used to soften the seat. My wife had extra upholstery cloth from one of her projects that I used for covers.
If you look closely at the benches (or blow the photo up) you will see that the benches are nothing more than the same 3/4" plywood and the edges have been sealed with iron-on oak veneer. I made six benches and I think I had to buy another sheet of cabinet grade veneer. Plan carefully and four sheets is plenty to make all of the parts.
In the Fall, Home Depot usually has this 3/4" on sale for $25.00 a sheet so wait and watch or ask one of the sales people to keep four sheets for you.
Altogether it probably took me a day or two to make all this stuff. When it is all together it looks great and everyone seems to like it. We use it on the holidays when all the kids and their kids, etc are home. As a table it is great because everything can be placed in the middle. Lots of fun passing everything and everyone can see everyone else with four or five conversations going on at once. It is easy to assemble and take down but you will need a place to store the table top flat so it does not warp over time.
Everything came from Home Depot or JoAnn Fabric.
To make thebench tops, staple the fabric and foam rubber to 1/4" plywood then use staples or finishing nails to attach to the bench.

My six benches are 22" tall and knees (of regualar size people) do not hit the table apron. My knees hit the table (where I have an automatic ball return) But everyone else is OK. I have to sit a little sideways and at least one of the grandchildren is always sitting next to me. They don't have any problem and I am glad to have them there. 
Because it is a home made rig, I guess I could put wall board screws through the table top to the 2 X 4 supports for added stability. But I haven't had any trouble with a bunch a grandchildren and half drunken fathers all floating around so why bother.
With kids and all we have probably had 15 or more people sitting around this thing and it was well worth it to make. Hope that helps.
