Hi everyone, I read a thread about a month ago on another Forum. The cue maker stated he was going to produce 200.00 sneaky petes. I emailed the cuesmith with no reply. Finally got an email from him that his SP,s are now 350.00!!! What would you think of him? How would you take this? Is it reasonable to assume he is less than honest?

This is not dishonesty, CutShot. I don't doubt that this cuemaker had anticipated selling his product, once available, for $200. Based on your post, it would appear orders were not being accepted prior to the production of the cue. Had orders been accepted and not filled at the agreed to price, that would be dirty pool, but this doesn't appear to be the case.

My guess is that one of the following happened: a) production costs were greater than anticipated, and this compelled the cuemaker to sell for more, b) after production, the cuemaker thought highly enough of the cue he had produced that he liked his chances of getting good sales at a higher price than the one originally intended, or c) early sales were so encouraging that the price was raised. In all three of these situations, the cuemaker's actions are about supply and demand.

To me, the only thing this cuemaker is guilty of is a lousy prediction.

What you say could be true, but dosent a real man stand by what he says? I can say I will sell you a Souththwest for 100.00 and if you contact me I say it is now 3000.00 Would you think me an honest person?

CutShot, this in entirely a question of offer and acceptance, an important legal concept. In my post, I agreed that if an offer to sell was met with a commitment to buy at an agreed to price, it's dirty pool. I just sensed from the way you presented it that there was no offer and acceptance here, making the cuemaker's actions honest. If I misinterpreted you, I'm sorry.

low balling

In the consumer market, the tactic of offering a product at a low price then trying to sell it a higher price is called low balling. As SJM said, the cue maker may of just under estimated his costs and couldn't deliver at that price. Your option at that point, although dissapointed, is to refuse. There are alot of places to shop for a quality cue at a fair price. Just find a few more places and make a wise choice. Be thankful for the cuemakers honesty for not taking your $200 and trying to hold you up for $150 more. Then you both would have a problem!

Making a very general statement on a forum is NOT an offer of a firm price but should only be construed as a "plan". Had he made an offer to YOU and accepted an order with a deposit, you would have a complaint. Otherwise, all you can say is that he misjudged his futute price. Also, why don't you go to that "other forum" and post a follow up rather than here ???

A number of years ago a guy said he was going to produce a portable cue lathe for about $300. When he finally went to market it was closer to $800. Unfortunate yes, but no big deal since no money changed hands prior to the "real" price being publicized. It was simply a concept.

I can say I'm going to open a Pool Room and only charge $1.00 per hour but when reality sets in the actual price will be totally different. No dishonesty involved. Just bad judgment. Get over it.
