Distributing league session prize money?

For those of you that have been on teams that finished the session at the top of the division, how do you all distribute the prize money that team gets at the end of the session? This question may be more specific to APA, but it may be relevant to other leagues as well.

Many years ago I was on a team that would divide the money equally amongst all the team members in cash and that seemed to work out well.

I’m currently on a team that gradually uses the previous session’s prize money as credit to pay weekly league dues and I have a slight issue with it, but not enough to cause a big stink about it.

My issue with the way my team currently does it is that the money isn’t distributed equally. The way our team is structured, the high S/L’s don’t get to play as many games during the session, so the lower S/L’s that get to play more often ultimately get a higher percentage of the money.

Additionally, I have a suspicion that our team captain has stolen money from the team in the past. There was an occasion when the team had credit on the score sheet, yet the team captain collected money from everyone that played that night. The following week the score sheet indicated that the team’s credit had gone down. I’m not sure if anyone on the team noticed.

I have played on teams that pay everyone equally and teams which pay based on number of matches played. Personally I do not have an issue with either one and I play most of the time as one of the highest skilled players. FWIW, these are BCA and NAPA leagues without max handicaps.

I think paying equally is fine if everyone has played about the same number of matches over the course of a season.

Paying based on matches played is fine too if there is a big discrepancy in weeks played. If someone plays 14 weeks and someone else plays 4, then one person paid 3.5 times as much. I do not really see it as being fair that they both get the same amount of money back. Now I think it should be equal if the person who only played 4 matches showed up every week and coached or kept score. They did things which contributed to the team without playing matches.

Honestly, I have played in probably a dozen leagues where there was prizemoney involved
and never once have there been any issues about it. I would seriously consider a different
team for next season.

As to what we generally do, either split it up equally between all players (if someone very
rarely plays then he gets less) but most of the time we just went on a fun day with the whole
team. Like bowling, drinking and bbq-ing.

I divide the money evenly among the players who play often enough to qualify for the session playoffs AND who I can rely on to show up when they say they are going to.

I don't like the idea of using winnings from one session to pay off the next; too easy to lose track of it. If my players want to stick their prize money in their case and use it next session for dues, that's up to them. But I'm paying everyone off ASAP.

In most of the VNEA leagues I have played in, the team divided up the money per point. Total received by the team was determined by the total of points scored, so it seems fair that it continue on more level to the players.

This does not reward showing up for the weaker players, so an alternative might be to use 50% of the prize fund and divide by weeks played. The other 50% would then be divided by points scored.

Using a per point system if using the 10 point per game scoring gives an incentive on every game to make balls.

I played in a local call pocket 8-ball league for a few years. Payouts were given based on how many total match wins everyone had. Our dues were $5 per match; Each player paying $5. Whoever won their match, got $5 at the end of the session for that win and the loser's money went towards the prize money.

We never had any problems, because if you didn't win, you didn't get paid.

The team I play on is a money league and we have an agreement that as long as you play when we call you then you get an even share. We also have a weaker player that shows up every night just in case we need him. Though he only played twice last session he got an equal share.
It should be open about what you've won and payed out on set date. If you want to throw your money in a pot for league dues then you should keep a record
Business is business when money is involved and make sure your money is accounted for

The way my team has always done it is first everyone gets their money back. So if you played 10 weeks of the season you get $100 back (10x$10), if you played 8 weeks you'd get $80, and so on. What's left is split evenly. I suppose we could also prorate the excess funds based on number of weeks played but we don't bother taking it that far since it really wouldn't matter much - it's not like one guy played every week while another only played once all season. Everyone is satisfied with this distribution.
