Divider in ball return box?

I just got a GC IV installed in my house this week. Came from a pool room with only a few years of play on it, looks great and I'm sure will play great once the cloth breaks in.

I noticed after the first rack when I reached into the ball return to grab the balls that my hand hit something. I'm used to just reaching in there and grabbing 3 balls in each hand. I looked down, and the ball return box has a divider separating the ball returns on either side from the front area of the box. Odd, because I don't ever remember another table being like that, usually the boxes are all the way back the the ball returns are just fed into the box and slightly exposed, have never really snagged my hand on one or anything.

Is this standard on a GC IV, or some sort of option? I have to look more closely, but I didn't see any screws or anything to remove, but I'm guessing it's not there structurally but to help catch the balls when they come out of the returns.

Here's a picture, bottom of pic, you can see the divider and imagine the piece being in the correct orientation and see how the holes for the returns are divided from the front of the box.

Also, any recommendations on products to use (or not to use) to shine up or polish the nickel castings or trim pieces and keep the rails and skirts clean?

Thanks!

Brunswick was having complaints about the balls coming out of the ball box so they put in the wood stretcher to settle the balls down and stop them from hopping out of the tray. The balls now drop down into the box and have to roll flat to go under the stretcher.
