DIY Tip Replacement - Ferrule Question

I am replacing the tip on a cue I bought and have a quick question.

It had a leather tip and I cut that off.

But there was a thin reddish Brown layer on top of the white of the ferrule.

Wondering if that is part of the ferrule itself or if that is part of tip?

It feels extremely hard, harder than the tip material.

Don't remove it. It protects the ferrule. Center the tip onto the red pad.

We used to put those in ivory ferrules back in the day. Not sure if they are relevant now. I'd remove it, especially if using a Kamui clear :)

With an unbacked tip, that's what I'd do. If you are doing your own tips, it will allow you more mistakes before you damage the ferrule itself.

If it's not on tight, you will get a click in the hit and then you have to take it off.
