Do all cues have "A" joints????

a friend at the pool room showed me his new ebony cue
ebony front/leather grip/ebony butt with a hoppe ring
rings below the joint above and below the wrap
nice looking cue "simple elegance" to me
played well
i got to thinking since there were no points
is there an "A "joint
or do theese type of single wood no point cues not have "A" joints
im not a cue maker

An A-joint is the joint where the forearm is attached to the handle. Are there rings above the leather wrap separating the wrap and the forearm? If so, there is an A-joint. If there are no rings, and you removed the wrap and discovered the entire cue was ebony, then there would be no A-joint. That is highly unlikely though. There is a 99% chance the cue has an A-joint.

Whether the forearm has points really has no direct bearing on whether a cue has an A-joint.

A cue might be constructed with a full length core with a distinct forearm and handle wood. Whether such a cue has an A-joint depends on your perspective. If a builder defines an A-joint as the mating of the visible forearm wood to the visible handle wood, the full core construction might be the mating method of the A-joint. If you define the A-joint has the joining of a distinct and separate forearm (whether individually cored or not) to a distinct and separate handle (whether individually cored or not) using a construction technique that does not incorporate a shared component (not counting a relatively short tenon/pin), a cue with one full length core would not have an A-joint.

If it has rings at both ends of the wrap then it probably has an "A" joint. But, the cue could be made with a full length core.
 
I try to not put any extra joints in my cues. I have been using a full core and sleeving everything on. Imho it makes the cue more solid and a lot less to go wrong with it.

I have no A joint in 90% of the cues I make . I use a 30" dowell and sleeve everything on , that way I get rings at the top and bottom of wrap , and a very solid cue . jim
 
I hope that ebony front has a maple handle for stability, less weight and a lot
more feedback to the grip hand.
