Do you bother with a chalk holder at home???

Do you know whether or not it is illegal to use the chalk as a bridge aid?

The old gentleman from whom I 'stole' my game did as you do & with the cue actually sitting on the chalk for many shots.

I never could get accustomed to doing it.

I was just wondering about the legality of it as a bridge aid. I had heard way back when that it was illegal.

I don't use a chalk holder at home, I just have two pieces on the rails.

I do use the Chalk Shark when I play leagues. I find the holder is nice to use, because alot of times there is no chalk on the tables.

In addition, the Chalk Shark is very good! The magnet is strong and you don't have to slide the chalk into a slot. I can also have a shirt overhanging my belt and the magnet still works through the clothing.

Dip in thumb and finger, easy peasy

If you tried to actually use the chalk to hold up a stick or something, I'm sure a ref would tell you no. I know I would, unless you could not use your other hand due to a disability and just happned to use the chalk as a bridge hand instead for some odd reason.

According to the rules, you need to use the equipment for it's intended purpose. You use a bridge to hold the cue if you can't reach, your hand to make the bridge, the chalk to add friction to the tip.

I don't think there is a rule or a ref that would tell you that you can't grip the chalk in your hand as you shoot though.

Um... I use a chalk holder, AND I brush the tip instead of drilling. I don't even make a squeaky sound.

There must be something wrong with me.

Yeah, that's a good idea but if I leave my chalk pouch/holder at home, I use my buddy's secret and place the chalk on top of my wallet in my back pocket. That works pretty good, but I like the SNAP of the washer clicking on the rare earth magnet. Only problem is the washer doesn't remain stuck to the chalk for the life cycle of the chalk. If the chalk makers ever get a clue, there is demand for a metal washer to be placed between the bottom of the chalk and the chalk's outer covering/paper/vinyl.

Attach your washer to the chalk like normal, then wrap the bottom part in electrical tape and melt it down slightly (waving it back and forth around the tape) with a lighter. This should completely seal it around the chalk. If you get down to where the tape is, just use a razor and cut some of it down. I am guessing you still end up losing it before it gets down to the bare nubbin, I know i would. :)

I personally use this holder and absolutely love it. I even bought one for a buddy that constantly chalks like me and he loves it as well.

I have come so use to having it on my hip that it drives me nuts if I forgot to put it on before I start playing or if my case is upstairs and I am down stairs.

2 things about it though after having many hours of using it. The clip holding it on is tight at first, but loosens up over time. Mine is getting to the point that it is too easy and I will have to replace it soon but after having it for over a year and I shoot at minimum 4 nights a week for several hours it was a good investment. Second thing is that sometimes it may get caught on chair backings and such and get popped out. Rarely is a problem, but honestly the only 2 slight negatives about it.

One other thing, you may need to tighten the 4 sides that hold the chalk in as it can be loose sometimes.

That's a nice one. I also have the leather snooker pouch and clip to keep the insides of my pocket from turning blue.

Of course I was naturally a rail chalk keeper. But having an 18 month old running around the table at home while trying to get practice in changed all that. after the 101st time while down on a shot and seeing a little hand reach up and grab a cube of high end chalk in your line of sight is the ultimate in sharking moves.

You just haven't mastered a particular shot until you can hit it flawlessly and upon followthrough, simultaneously lunge to grab said chalk from the toddler's little blue hand before it gets a saliva bath.

Needless to say, I'm a chalk holder player by attrition, and it's now become part of my pre shot routine.

Chalk holders of world, unite and take over!
It's us versus them :p

The chalk is hell against my palm with my ring finger, the chalk never touches the table or my cue during bridging.
Back in the 60's the old rooms would sand their chalk real thin as the hole got deeper. There was lots of chalk on the tables but, it was tough to find a newer piece of chalk, so when you did you, didn't put it down or someone from another table would steal it.
I don't no if it's legal or not to keep it in your hand, never been called for it ???

I'll confess to using a pocket chalker. This because some of the bars I used to play in had crappy chalk or even no chalk. It's now part of my pre shot routine...so much so that I feel weird using chalk on the rail.

This! My home table has one piece on each rail that somehow migrate together as well. I use a chalk holder at league though; to speed up the match because there usually is only one or two pieces max on their tables and they always seem to be on the opposite side of where I need them to be.

This malady seems to be going around. I found it makes no difference how many cubes I have out, they all end up together, and either exactly in the place I need to get over for my next shot or at the opposite end of the table.

My wife won one of those spiffy gold-plated Qpod chalk holders with the magnetic clip at SBE, and since she hardly ever plays, she promptly gave it to me. The thing is heavy and distracts me for some reason, so I've only been using to mark "my" pocket playing one-pocket against myself at home.

I may actually start clipping it on my belt so I won't have multiple cubes of chalk on the rails that need to be dealt with. Maybe I can bump my speed up a ball or two just due to the increased ability to stay focused on the shot at hand instead of where I should slide all the chalk cubes to. ;)
 
I balance the chalk on my head while I'm shooting. It keeps my head straight and lets me know if I jump up too quickly.

How do you get much beyond the borders of the chalk holder with normal chalk wear and still manage to brush the chalk over the tip? I've never seen it done with a chalk holder. The edges of the holder get in the way pretty quick. Pretty good trick if you can do it.

There's nothing wrong with you, no need to jump to that conclusion.

Shim it up with some small pieces of cardboard.

Maybe i didn't explain properly, or understand your question. You pull the chalk out of the plastic holder, put a little piece of cardboard inside the holder, then replace the chalk. Now your chalk is once again higher than the edge of the holder. Again apologies if this is not what your question is.
 
I'm not a fan of pocket chalk holders. It's just one more doodad to hang on to at the pool hall or clang against the table when I am shooting.
