Hey everyone,

I searched google and youtube and here with "potting drills" but didnt really find what I was looking for. Perhaps you guys can help me.

Tomorrow Ill be practicing with a friend who just started playing (he pots 0 - 2 balls per turn). I want to do some potting drills before we go to positionplay.

Do you have some good drills that cover quite a bunch of the shots a player needs?

Thanks in advance!

btw: is pool.bz offline? They used to have the cuetable tool but I can no longer acces it (maybe because Im @ work?)

First I would help him become comfortable with the stop shot. I can't count how many times I see people who have played pool for a long time that can't do this consistently. IMO had they learned the principal behind the stop shot early on it would have helped a lot.

Here is a good one I found online-

thanks for your suggestion, Im going to check out billiardsdigest a bit more.

The stopshot is slightly to advanced yet :) First I want to get the potting better, then position.

I don't think it is advanced. It can be a straight in shot and helps the person see the difference between bottom and top spin.

When I found that progressive shot drill on billiards digest I had actually done a search for 'progressive cut shot'. I use that almost everytime I practice because it helps me see the cut angle a lot better. Unfortunately its not listed on that site. Let me dig around a little more. I bet Dr Dave has it.

kolaas...You need to teach them what a stroke is. Build a solid bridge, and show them how a pendulum stroke works (show them how to physically start and finish a stroke). Then teach them a stop shot with the CB and OB only a foot apart. Set up a series of OB's on the head or foot string, and let them take ball-in-hand on each shot, but keep the distance close (a foot). The object is to stop the CB...so they should try to set it up straight in, with ball-in-hand. This will teach them a lot. Then the other progressive drills will make more sense, and be easier to master. If you are unsure of what a good stroke should be, consult our instructional dvd, Play Better Pool, Vol. 1, Mastering the Basics.

Yes.. that progressive practice is perfect! Gives alot of possibilities for many many drills. Thanks thanks thanks!
The extension of progressive practice that takes a while to figure out is how to adapt the technique to your particular weak shots. An example would be potting and easy nearly full shot into a corner pocket and using running follow to spin out of the corner. The progression could be either on the distance the cue ball travels or the distance of the shot from the pocket.

Some other progressive drills and the original article about PP are here: http://www.sfbilliards.com/articles/BD_articles.html

Good luck with your game.
