Do you Play in Bars in Tournaments, and do you take a Good Cue to play with

I am think of getting a Inexpensive Sneak pete as recently I have been playing in a few Local Bar Tournaments, but to be honest i get the feeling my good cues are NOT SAFE in this environment.

Have a chance to pick up a nice Dufferin Sneak Pete, and Soft Case for under $50.00, and am think of use this when i go to the local Bar tournaments.

This concern was SPARKED after a Guy had his Cue, and Case lifted a couple of weeks ago, and strangely enough NO ONE SAW nothing
.............

If you get a sneaky pete keep a close eye on it. The cheap soft cases are pretty common so some duct tape or whatever around it might help it from getting picked up by mistake.

I had a Predator sp get its shaft sanded down with coarse sandpaper once.

I take my Frey SP. I consider it a nice cue, It never leaves my sight though.

nope

we haven't had a tournament around my city for a long time, even in bars! if the occasion ever comes up though, I always take my trusty DZ s/p to use as it's kinda low key and plays...well, you know :D . our last tournament I knew of was in a BAD neighborhood, but I went with some friends, and ended up winning it :D . this was my first and last time stepping foot in that place. the owner looked at me kinda funny afterwards, but I just thanked him and took off. didn't make much, but got a few locals a little irritated getting called a "ringer". needless to say some of them weren't too happy, but life goes on...right?

Ive lived in a small town in Alaska for about the last 10 years, and all pool is in bars. Ive taken every cue, and any cue Ive owned to tournaments here. Be careful with them (closer quarters than I personally like) and keep an eye on them and you should be fine. Conversely, I wouldnt take anything valued at 2000+ to a bar...... :D
The sneaky pete idea is ok...... but it helps other people get the wrong idea about you. They may think you are there trying to cheat or hustle them. If you go in with one of your regular playing cues, and just go to play and have a good time, people tend to react better than the "ringer" moniker.
A quick story, when I first moved to where I live, I went to a little 16 person bar tourney, and went in not knowing what to expect. I was coming off playing very seriously for alot of years, and ran completely over the mess of them. No one liked it, but in the weeks to come, it led to some good action. So my advice..... and Im not telling you to hustle anyone..... play well enough to win, but dont show your true speed unless its of some value to you. In 10 years, Ive only opened up 2 or 3 times when the money was right, and only practice full speed in bars when no one is watching.

Porper Case and a Sneak Pete

Porper has a $20 vinyl case with tubes that works great. Get yourself a quality sneaky in a satin finish and call it good.

im the exact same way i love my frey and it never leaves my sight it may not be "pretty" but it hits like a dream and for a college student its the most expensive cue ive ever owned. and i bring it to every bar tournament i play in even if it were stolen i live in a small town where customs are few and far between.

My .02 cents

I don't play in bars and haven't for some time. I always go to Pool rooms
locally, but now and then I end up in a bar out of town.

The best inexpensive soft case, I think, is the Crystal Leisure case. Why?
Because it has the same pockets on it as a hard case, a little one with 2 seperate sections in it with their Wizard logo embroidered on the front, and a long one that accomodates a jump butt handle and everything else
you have. It is the only soft case I have seen that can handle a jump butt inside the pocket. I carried a Sneaky Pete and the jump cue, but could have fit 1 more cue in it. It is a dark blue color, and I paid $30 for
it at Shooters here in Wichita. It's light and easy to manage, and has a
shoulder strap.

A sneeky pete in a bar can be even more risky. If you leave it unattended, some drunk may grab it thinking it is a house stick. Then you will have a difficult time getting it back.

Best to unscrew it when not using it and keep it with you at all times.

There are thieves every where so if you leave your house with your equipment, it is at risk. That's why I refuse to buy an expensive cue, my $130 Lucasi is all I'm willing to put at risk. The cue follows my lead, If I'm playing good the cue follows, If I'm playing bad it ain't the cue's fault.

Let me start by saying there are no two cues in the world that play exactly the same. Any person who plays with two or more cues is not playing up to their potential. Every time you switch cues you are wasting practice time adpting to that cue instead of adding to the feel you have for your normal playing cue.

I've used the same cue now for 10 years and it goes wherever I go but if I happen not to have it with me and an occasion presents itself to play pool then I refuse to play.

I had an old Indian friend named Jimmy Ward (goes by JW) that plays with nothing but a beat up house stick. The last time he was in Vegas before he had to leave the USA for Canada he took 3rd place in the Senior's Division (only reason he didn't win is his break went south on him). He always used to say if the tip is shaped right and you keep a loose grip and your mechanics are sound, it doesn't matter what you shoot with. It's all focus. I played league with him for a couple of years (when he would show up) and he would run rack after rack. He's in his upper 60's or early 70's now but at one time he was one of the very best bar box shooters in the states. Just goes to show you it's not the stick, it's the person holding it that counts.
Myself, I take a Predator or what ever cue feels good in my hands, but I always use a Predator shaft. I love the feel of the new 314-2 shafts with the Everest layered tips. They have an AWESOME feel to them.

Ditto.

Back when before I bought my Ted Harris S/P, I used to shoot with my Szamboti during league nights. Okay, okay, before anyone gets the wrong image, first of all, no one knew what that cue was worth because I never advertised the make or price and, second, I always put the cue away in my case after I was finished shooting.

I don't put the S/P away after my games only because I keep it in a "safe corner" with all my other teammates cues and we basically fill the bar because it's so small. Plus, having been the League Champs for 8 years in a row garners a bunch of respect from the bar regulars who will "clear the bar stools" for us on League nights.

Get yourself a nice Sneaky Pete and put it away when you lose and have to sit.

I recently sent Mike Webb a one piece Dufferin. He's going to modify it slightly. I plan to use it as my "knock around" cue. Here are the specs:
Install a 3/8-10 wood to wood joint
Change shaft taper to approximately match a Schon
Install linen wrap
Replace rubber bumper

There are a few different situations that come up for me and here is how i handle them. First is leauge night. I bring my favorite shooting cue, my favorite case, and often my newest addition to my collection for show and tell.At leauges I have a lot of close friends looking out for all of our equipment and am at low risk of loosing any. But at any other time I'm out playing I try to have a partner or buddy with me so we can take turns as the other steps away for a while. When this isnt possible I will still bring my favorite cue but bring a crappy case with me to carry it in with and then no matter where i go, Including the restroom! the cue stays with me.I just rest the butt on my shoe when I need to and even if it looks a little funny, I still have my favorite cue to shoot with without risk of theft. the third situation is an unfamilliar or just plain seedy place (plenty of those here the denver area) I bring a plain cue that plays good but does not draw atention and i leave it in the truck untill i see if the house cues are playable first.

Thankfully in the 25+ years that I have been playing, I have yet to have any of my cues stolen. But wherever I goto play, I take my primary case & set of cues with me. For the most part I exclusively play at 1 pool room in my area and everyone knows me and my equipment. On the times that I go out to another bar for travelling league play, I still take my primary set of cues. I just make sure that my cues stay in close quarters with the rest of my teammates cues. And everyone on the team watches everyone's stuff. If I have to go somewhere between pool locations such as the grocery store or someplace I cary the case & cues with me. That sometimes results in people asking about what I have in my case but I keep the answer short & simple.

If I walk into any pool establishment without my cues, I tend to not play. I feel like playing with anything less than what I normally am used too is not going to do much to help further my game even if the playing is just for "casual fun".

Try a House Q for Fun...

I take my nice cue, because it's basically my only cue. I do own a 60" s/p, however , it took so long for me to get back to shooting with a 58" that I am not going back to the 60" for shooting, unless I absolutely have to. I do take my nice cue out of it's nice case and use my StrokeSports (Instroke Germany) case, as it allows me to store my cue assembled nicely while not shooting....or, in the case of bathroom or other breaks, I just break it all down and into the bathroom or wherever it goes with me. I watch my equipment like a hawk.

that does happen Billy, but it's not always the case. my s/p's I use, have a black linen trim ring at the joint to keep wood from splitting during breaking. it is best to unscrew it during breaks and put it away, but I never play pool by myself in a bar so I always have someone watching my stuff.
