Do you think about the percentages on shots?

How often do you think about the percentages on a shot?

When you are playing a difficult shot or safety, do you think about the percentage of the time you will make it? Specific numbers like 75%, 50%, 10%... How many people have the ability to do this accurately and use it? I've heard players like Rempe and Grady talk about percentages on shots a lot, but it's something that I don't incorporate into my game at all.
i don't like playing by percentages too much because you bring too many negatives into your thought process, you should choose offense or defense because if you think you might miss you probably will. so if you have a negative attitude towards making a ball you are much better off playing the safety.Occasionally there are truly two way shots that line up for you, but you shouldn't go looking to shoot everything with the thought of if i miss, because you will! All your mind hears is the word miss, not the word if. you program yourself to succeed or fail every time you contemplate a shot. that's the big difference between pros and the rest of us, is their mental attitudes. they know they are going to succeed before they swing the cue because they program themselves to succeed!...........just my opinion!

Hmm, so it sounds to me like very few people on here know what percentage of the time they will make a shot. I don't really think it would be a bad thing to think about and know though. Sometimes I think players get upset no matter what shot they miss, be it hard or easy. If you know what percentage of the time you can expect to make a shot, you have some idea whether to think "oh I'm missing a lot today" or "oh, sometimes I miss that shot, it's probably not a problem". At least according to The Pleasures of Small Motions, this should be a very helpful idea. Neither of these two thoughts are necessarily negative, it's just what you do with them after you have them.

Following the precepts of "The Pleasure of Small Motions" will make you happier and more contented. It is very unlikely to make you a winner.

I think if it is risky, don't shoot it. If you feel good about it, shoot it.

I'm laughing, but not at you. A three page thread and a newcomer managed to put it all in a nutshell.

Welcome!
