Do You Use Sidespin by Feel?

Often I don't use any system to compensate for sidespin. I just know automatically where to compensate, and I line up on the shot that way, without really thinking about it. I guess it has alot to do with how used to my cue I am, because I am used to the deflection. I noticed that for alot of shots, the majority of the pros do the same thing. I don't see them pivoting their cues that often. Do any of you use sidespin without a system?

I don't use any systems when I play except the diamond system, and a few tidbits for kicking/banking. I have tried to implement alignment systems, but I have just played by feel for too long. I aim every shot center ball and stroke the spin when I pull the trigger.

The only time I"m not comfortable with how I play is when I get a new cue. It can be a pain til I get used to the deflection.

Gerry, about how long did it take you to learn and understand the diamond system for kicking? I've known about it for years but never bothered to learn it.

cue, I did a search on diamond systems, and bumped into a website by Jimmy Reid. His systems made alot of sense to me, and worked first try on my table. It's also easy to count compared to the ones on billiards sites.

Grady, and Freddie both have good kicking and banking info in thier books too.

Was it easy to memorize? I skimmed through an article on how to use the diamond system. It was very long and seemed quite complicated. I kept telling myself "I'll learn it later". Maybe it was a different system than the one you are talking about, I heard there are a few variations. I guess I am looking for the most accurate one, no matter how long it takes to memorize. I think it would win me alot more matches if I had the willpower to learn it.

I go by the feels w/ aiming and spinning. Wish I could say it came naturally...hell, I guess it did...after hitting about 786,534 shots!

nope don't go by feel

Unfortunately I'm one of those guys that once I get into some sort of routine it's a pain in the arse to break it. I used to shoot centerball on everyshot (forward and draw only, no sidespin).. As I progressed in my game several years back I learned that a little left and right gets you around the table alot easier. Unfortunately though now it seems I can't shoot a ball centerball to save my life. Seems like every shot I shoot has left or right on it.

Shooting long straight shots, I practiced with a stripe the other day as the cueball, and I came to the conclusion that I'm actually aiming slightly off center and throwing the object ball back online.. WTF?? LOL Now that I have a table I'm going to start working on all this stuff, but it's interesting to see how one can develop these kinda habbits, and just get good enough at them to make it work.

Incidentally, all feel.. All this back hand english blah blah blah. That might be ok if your teaching someone for the first time, but go back and try to learn it after using side spin for years.. Ain't no way no how.. Again in my lowly opinion.

situational side spin

I stick pretty close to centre ball when I'm using side spin for shotmaking. I find this is enough to get the shape I need after making contact with the OB so I suppose you can say that's by feel. The only time I actually pay close attention to how much side spin I'm using is when I'm kicking.

Jimmy Ried( who's name came up earlier in the thread) shows a great diamond system using sidespin on one of his videos. It works great, you do have to calibrate it for each table you play on, but one shot should show you whether it plays tight or loose. but basically the way it works is each diamond is worth about a tip of english. so if you're shooting straight across the table with the CB sitting on one diamond, it will land on the diamond next to it with a tip of english, 2 diamonds away with 2 tips off centre. This system can be used for 2 and 3 rail kicks as well.

Cue, I use BHE (Backhand english) to avoid having to compensate.
I had way too many easy missed shots trying it the other way.
