Do You Want Pool to be a Business or a Sport?

Simple and beautifully stated JB Cases!

It's a nice thought , and 128 is achievable to a mediocre living but no more than that , it's not viewer friendly and no one see's it as a particularly hard game to play ,, Yang hit world class play in 2 yrs ,it took tiger 2 decades by comparison ,, the big sports outside of freaks a decade plus ,
Pool simply can't compete at any level , not only for participants but sponsorship and TV interest as well

Sad but pool will never be big on tv. When professionals play at their high level pool is boring to only a very few. Every shot looks easy because they know how to put the cue ball on a dime. I would love it to happen. It almost did in the 90's but, as pool always seems to do, the players ended up shooting themselves in the foot. Put what the sponsor sold aside, the Camel Pro Tour was the last best chance.

Nothing can be more boring than high level snooker. But the BBC nurtured it and provided professional production, professional commentary, and professional promotion.

Pool can have a decent audience on TV but not as fractured as it is in the United States.

John... it surprises me that you would say that. Snooker is a great game & people in the European countries love it. So do I. Ronnie O'Sullivan & Hurricane Higgins are folk heroes.

Any game of Pool and /or Billiards is fun for me to watch. I've been to the the EXPO, DC & Vegas many times... It looks as though the spectators are having a great time.

Maybe that would be a good starting spot here in the USA

I think business men are more inclined to make a pool room a success. It's not a big science opening a room but takes good marketing, location etc.

There are people everywhere, myself included who are working to shore up the foundation of "pool".

You gonna help?

I like what you're doing, but I'm not sure i understand how it's creating a foundation for pool. Just like i admire what JB wants to do, but imo it really has no effect on how pool works.

I've already begun.

Doubt anyone wants to watch pool, especially since they have no idea who the players are. There was a time when certain players were household names. Not the case anymore. To add to that. It's a sport dominated by other countries with even more players no one has ever heard of.

It's certainly not many watching ,as we saw in the hustlers lipstick on a pig had zero effect bringing in viewers ,,, and yes with other country's dominating the game something that's no guestion going to get worse ,, where is the viewers going to come from

You are correct.
This happens to be the current state of things.
Very few know who the pro's are and therefore we must make the masses aware.

I believe that pool is already a business for some. If it could become a business that makes good money for many areas of the sport then pool will be great. So to answer the question I think you need both. I want it to be a sport that is supported by business. I know there is always a comparision to other sports but if NFL franchises were not businesses maybe there would be no NFL same can be said with many other sports.

My point was that people love snooker DESPITE how boring it is because the media gave it life. They put it out there in a way that normal non-players can appreciate and have heroes to cheer for.

I appreciate snooker as well from a players perspective. But put snooker on TV anywhere else than Britain and some parts of China and it doesn't draw flies.

People love to be involved and until someone figures out how to get viewers emotionally involved in how well players do pool will languish.

JB, you may not be exactly correct here.

Out of many sports televised all around Europe via Eurosport, snooker has excellent vewing percentage.

But then, again - we are strange people... :)

I found this in an old post 12-28-10 Maybe Niksch has some comments
