Document Encryption

Im interested in knowing if there have been any advances in Document Encryption. I would like to be able to encrypt a document so as to prevent it from being copy and pasted for use on another computer.

I know that Amazon can do this but from what little I know is this commercially available anywhere?

If you make the document a picture (save it as a picture file like a JPG), you can't copy/paste the text from it. You can also create a PDF file from it that is an image and not text.

Encryption is not for locking down the contents, it would be used to scramble the whole document so you can't even open it without the password. You can also password protect it form changes but that will not prevent copy, when you password protect a document, it encrypts the file, which is why all those password recovery programs do nothing but guess at the password, not actually crack it.

Don't shoot the messenger...
If it can be read with eyeballs, it can be copied numerous ways, whether it is encrypted or not.

That said, one of the easier ways to " deter" cut n pasters is to post text as an image, or overlay it with a clear gif. But even then, that doesnt stop OCR, screen caps, and the good old fashioned transcriber.

Beyond that, seek out a copyright attorney:smile:

Thanks this might work for me. I read some of the first link already. Its a bit over my head but I will get it if I read it over a few times.

I would just like to be able to share some documents without multiple copy pasting going on. The computer, the ebook and the DVD are the way any more. All of that is sort of over my head.

Ok so if Im right its impossible for folks such a you and I with what we have to work with, to prevent the copy paste aspect of documents even if we save as jpg and have it imaged into pdf or encrypted so as it would take a key/password to open it.

If you're just trying to stop people from copying what they see there's nothing out there that can stop this.. But for screen capture there is an app called Yovo that claims it can do something similar...

So what possibilities does screen capture add or take away. Im not sure I follow you. I know what screen capture is but that's it.
 
Simply put, if you put something in digital form it is not safe. Whether it be DVD or a file. The Yovo app spoken of earlier can easily be gotten around by other capturing softwares.

Recording and movies industries spend millions upon millions trying to protect things.

True but people will get around it if they want to so it will be available on the black market no matter how you "lock" it.

There is also the right to use that people will post some of the books material in discussing it, asking questions about it and such that will get the material out there which is within their rights and within copyright law.
 
Don't waste your time. Honest people won't copy it anyway and dishonest people will easily get around whatever you try to do to prevent the copying.
 
There is no way to protect your work..
There are easy ways around any kind of copyrighting, etc..
Saving text as an image is the best way to prevent easily copy and pasting but then again, OCR programs can get by that.

There are scripts that can disable Right-Clicking on web pages, but they too can be circumvented..

I would recommend taking some or all of these preventative measures if you are concerned about your work, but warn you that if someone wants it bad enough they will get it..

Maybe only showing parts of said literature until full access is granted by some means.. Whether paid or registration..

I have figured out a way to track if someone were to copy and share...so its the share part I want to discourage. I wouldn't want a copy of my stuff on a website somewhere public or someone just copying and pasting and sending all over just for giggles. People can be mean.

I have come up with a way to know what copy was copied and shared and no one would know I had encrypted an number or identifier into the document. I would just have to encrypt this each time someone wanted it and register the copy to them in a book or document that I keep on file. This way if a copy turned up as having been shared I could easily get a copy of that, and using the tools of the program expose the hidden code that I put in denoting whose it was and then go after them. If I felt I needed to. A bit more trouble a few minutes each time. Im not sure if the threat of copyright infringement litigation has enough teeth to keep people from doing it.
