Dodgy Eyes = 100 Break - Go Figure?!

Sorry, I have to share this:

Last week my eyes started hurting a lot at work. I sit at a PC all day (not for much longer :-) but I've never had any problems before. The pain was really bad so I went to have an eye test. Although I have excellent long sight I found out I needed glasses for short stuff (reading and PC etc) but would need them long term eventually (I have thin eyes apparently - thanks Mum!)

Anyway I have had to wait all week to get the glasses made up but I still have to work and the eye strain has been terrible. Today I had to leave early because of the pain but later I felt alright so I went to have a game of snooker. My eyes where still strained and my vision was a little blurred still but first visit to the table I knock in 102 break and just miss the yellow off the spot. Then next frame I am on 64 and back to back centuries (which I have never done with good eyes!) and I foul the blue when potting a red with the long rest!!!

It reminds me when I passed my driving license at 8am after a big night on the beer and still over the limit - I had failed three times before when not drunk!

Can anyone explain this?!

What does the Dr. say about this?

Are you in your late 30's?

What are "thin" eyes?

Jeff Livingston

PS 102 break...nice!

Thats the sad thing, Im 30. Basically my eyes are thinner than normal and as I understand it the front of the eye projects what the eye sees on the back of the eye (like a cinema screen, where the front is the projector). Because my eyes are thinner then they should be the muscle in the eye has to work much harder to compensate and has finally had enough. Just means I have to where glasses to take the load off my eyes for reading etc but will get worse overtime and Ive been told may have to where contacts or glasses perm later.

Get glasses tomorrow, going to try playing in them to see if it helps?!

Might be able to see the balls lol

I don't think so and would be surprised if you did. If you're getting spec's for farsightedness (seeing up close), your long shots on the table won't be as clear as usual. You might have some blurring and the edges won't be as sharp, plus depth perception might be a little off.

The trials and tribulations of geezerdom...what I wouldn't give to be 30 again!

Im sure youre right dm, but I did try some lenses in the shop and looked across the mall (about 20ft) and it was still clear. I think this is because my eyes are not that bad yet from (eg lenses are pretty thin). However my eyes sure hurt like hell from straining all day.

Just thought it will be fun to see if it helps, even for close shots

Its all very sad though, bloody glasses @ 30!!

Don't give up on attempting to get a good correction for your eyes. I'll bet this first prescription you've gotten will need some adjustments to work for pool for you. Stay on top of your Doctor and don't let him put you off if you're not happy.

Not meaning to bore people with my eye story, but for the last 5-6 years, I've been trying to find a good contacts' prescription for my pool playing. I'm both nearsighted and cannot read, so I finally got my 'script at about 1/2 power so my depth of field was about 3' to 9,' just right for pool.

I say "was" because 3 weeks ago, I had LASIK surgery. Now I'm almost worse off. Instead of 20/600, I'm about 20/50. Sounds like an improvement, but so far, it's not.

I can now read anything (cool) but everything past 4' is still blurry. And I cannot wear contacts for several months while I'm healing, so I'm pretty much screwed for pool this season. I have thin eyes (corneas), too, and may not be able to have touch-up surgery, so I pretty much wasted a good chunk of cash and another year, which are getting scarce.

So I just ordered some frameless lenses ($4500 for surgery, and now $225 for glasses!) and I'll see if I can play in glasses again, after 5 years of contacts only. The reflection from the lights drove me crazy before---maybe these frameless glasses will help with that.

Driver is dead on: Geezerdom sucks! But I'm not going down without a fight!

May your eyes have what it takes,

Jeff Livingston

I just got prescription glasses for presbyopia; have never worn glasses except reading glasses at about 45. I am now 52. It took about three weeks for me to get used to the glasses but my game has definitley improved as a result. I spoke with another player recently and he had his Doctor design glasses specially for playing pool. They are similar to aviator style in shape so he can see through them when he is down on the shot, smaller glasses are more problematic as you look through the top of the lense. They also took out the reader part of the prescription on his playing glasses which also seems like a good idea. Good Luck and keep working with the Doctor. I had an anti glare coating applied to mine and it seems to work quite well. They want you to be happy and healthy also.

Cheers Jeff, I will see how it goes its all come as a bit of a shock as I never noticed a problem before other than the odd issue when reading. I also never really thought how glasses work for both near and long vision - I never new that there has to be a compromise and that glasses or contacts are not perfect. Stands to reason given how lenses work but just never thought about it! Oh well hopefully its just for reading and I won't need them for pool for a while. It sounds like you've had a few issues, I keep reading about laser surgery but for some reason lasers and eyes just make me cringe! Although a few months ago I read about laser surgery that is supposed to improve vision to 20:10! Probably not perfected yet but I remember wondering if this would help target sportsmen? Also wondered if it would be considered cheating if it was done?

I shall try and stay ontop of my doctor, he's a she though so I might get slapped :-)

These are often refferred to as "DennisTaylor" glassess in the snooker world (Dennis was a pro who first made them famous). Hopefully I won't need them just yet but I have several friends who have them - seem to work. I've got the anti reflective coatin on the ones I ordered - it loks good (never thought I would say such a thing about glasses!)

Funny thing, when I was just about to go for my eye test a women who was collecting for charity stopped me and said "have you got any money for.." I interupted and said "sorry" and then she finished her sentence "...for the blind!" Makes you think, must be the worse thing in the world to lose your sight.
